  • Jay Payton is an outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles. After attending Zanesville High School in Zanesville, OH, Payton went on to play baseball at Georgia Tech University where he played with future major league stars Nomar Garciapara and Jason Varitek. The New York Mets drafted Payton in the 1st round of the 1994 amateur draft, and Payton would makes his Mets debut on September 1, 1998. Payton's best season as a Met came in 2000, when he hit .291 Batting Average, with 62 Runs Batted In, 17 Home Run, and finished 3rd in National League Rookie of the Year| voting. In 2002 the Mets traded Payton, David Pauley, Ramon Vazquez, and cash to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for outfielder Dave Roberts. The next season, the Red Sox traded Payton to the Oakland Athletics for Chad Bradford. After hitting 10 Home Run, and 69 Runs Batted In for the Athletics in 2006, Payton sign a free agent contract to join the Orioles.
