According to WTNH (New Haven), a fire alarm went off in the Student Union shortly after midnight, at which point, a fight broke out as people were being evacuated from a university-sanctioned party and Howard was stabbed. Howard was to become a father. His girlfriend, who lives in Miami, was on campus over the weekend, but not believed to have been at the party. John William Lomax was arrested and charged with the murder of Howard. On October 27, 2009, Lomax's attorney announced that Lomax had been arrested at his place of employment. On November 20, 2009, a man is alleged to have been with Lomax pleaded not guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit assault. Prosecutors say that 20-year-old Hakim Muhammad went with Lomax to Lomax's car after a minor altercation and returned with a knife.
