Career

Jason Calacanis created Silicon Alley Reporter in 1996, during the dot com boom. He originally published the journal using a photocopier and distributed it himself to coffee houses and other locations. The Reporter became a success in New York City, prompting Calacanis to create the Digital Coast Reporter shortly after (both journals were published by his company Rising Tide Studios). With the dot com bust, however, demand for these publications waned and he ended up selling his business.http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.01/blogger.html

In 2003, Calacanis founded Weblogs along with Brian Alvey, and became an avid blogger himself.http://nymag.com/news/media/15967/index3.htmlhttp://www.brianalvey.com/about/ He eventually sold this company, and in 2008 announced that he was retiring from blogging completely.http://techcrunch.com/2008/07/13/jason-calacanis-first-new-email-post/ He now writes long-form emails instead, and distributes them to subscribers.http://calacanis.com/about/
