Although he was drafted by the Dallas Stars in 1995, Jarome Iginla was traded to Calgary later that year and has played for the Flames ever since. In 2003, Iginla was named captain of his team and has proved himself a strong team leader both on and off the ice.
On March 1, 2009 Jerome Iginla surpassed Theo Fleury as the all-time points leader in Calgary Flames history.
Awards and Accolades
As the top goal scorer in the league, Iginla was awarded the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy in 2002 and again in 2004. Also the leader in scoring points in 2002, he received the Art Ross Trophy and was voted MVP by the NHL Players Association.
Iginla played for Team Canada at the Olympics in 2002 and 2006 and was considered instrumental in the team's 2002 gold medal win.
Although his team didn't make it past the first round in the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Iginla was nominated for the Hart Trophy, which is awarded to the player considered to be "the most valuable to his team." Evgeni Malkin and Alexander Ovechkin are also up for the award.
