Jarkko Ruutu is a professional hockey player with the National Hockey League's Ottawa Senators. Ruutu, previously a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks, signed with the Senators prior to the 2008-09 season.
Ruutu allegedly bit the thumb of Andrew Peters of the Buffalo Sabres during a scuffle in a January 6, 2009, game. After reviewing the incident, the NHL suspended Ruutu for two games for the incident.ESPN.com: Ruutu Suspended Two Games for Bite
Career Highlights
Ruutu began playing junior hockey in his native Finland in 1991. In 1995, he played one season for Michigan Technological University, then joined the HIFK in the SM-liiga, the Finnish Elite League. Ruutu was then drafted 68th overall in the 1998 NHL draft by the Vancouver Canucks. He played a single season with the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League before making his NHL debut with the Canucks in 2000. Ruutu returned to the SM-liiga during the 2004-05 NHL Lockout. He played one additional season with the Canucks, which included representing Finland in the 2006 Winter Olympics, winning the silver medal. Following the 2005-2006 season, Ruutu signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Penguins.-
