  • Jarkko Ruutu is a professional hockey player with the National Hockey League's Ottawa Senators. Ruutu, previously a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks, signed with the Senators prior to the 2008-09 season.

    Ruutu allegedly bit the thumb of Andrew Peters of the Buffalo Sabres during a scuffle in a January 6, 2009, game. After reviewing the incident, the NHL suspended Ruutu for two games for the incident.ESPN.com: Ruutu Suspended Two Games for Bite

  • Career Highlights

    Ruutu began playing junior hockey in his native Finland in 1991. In 1995, he played one season for Michigan Technological University, then joined the HIFK in the SM-liiga, the Finnish Elite League. Ruutu was then drafted 68th overall in the 1998 NHL draft by the Vancouver Canucks. He played a single season with the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League before making his NHL debut with the Canucks in 2000. Ruutu returned to the SM-liiga during the 2004-05 NHL Lockout. He played one additional season with the Canucks, which included representing Finland in the 2006 Winter Olympics, winning the silver medal. Following the 2005-2006 season, Ruutu signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
