Jared is most widely known as the creator of the "roach brooch," a piece of jewelry produced in 2006 that became notorious when it was featured on an episode of America's Next Top Model. Jared made the brooches by decorating giant Madagascar hissing cockroaches with Swarovski crystals, then adding a metal leash which anchored them to the wearer's dress or shirt. Each brooch cost $60, and came with instructions for the care and feeding of the Madagascar roach (which has a life expectancy of approximately one year). The roach brooch was sold in Black Chandelier stores, a retail chain which at that time served as the primary outlet for Jared's designs, or via mail order. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2006/04/20/DI2006042001287.html?nav=hcmodule

Most recently, Jared debuted his "Gold vs. Petker" collection at a Los Angeles runway show; he also commenced fund-raising efforts for his "Renegade Fashion Tour," which will involve his models, stylists, and newest designs going on board an Amtrak train and making stops for runway shows at major cities. The tour is part of Jared's newly established American Artisan's Foundation, which he describes as having an ultimate goal to "help jump-start the fashion industry at the grass roots level" and "take the fashion experience to designers who really want to start their own businesses as fashion designers, sewers, and producers." The initiave is sponsored by Janome, Sebastian Haircare, Fiji Water, Amtrak, and Hairroin Salon.

Career Overview

Jared was born in Sun Valley, Idaho. His original career goal was to become a pianist, but he grew weary of the rigors of musical competition and became interested to explore the possibilities of expressing himself through the medium of fashion. He started designing and selling his work while still a young person living in Idaho ...he would host raves and sell clothes made by himself and business partner Pamela Moye. He also began traveling to Los Angeles and San Francisco to sell his clothes, finding an eager clientele on the West Coast rave scene. http://newcitymovement.typepad.com/photos/idaho_rave_flyers/aajaredgoldplanethortonx.html

Jared began designing mass-produced lines in 2001, working as a collection designer for California Concepts. In 2003 he went into business under the "Black Chandelier" label, which opened a popular retail store in Salt Lake City, Utah that was managed and merchandised by Jared. Jared continued producing under the "Black Chandelier" label until 2007, when he began creating under his eponymous label and took a job as head designer at Lumenas Animation Studios in Los Angeles. http://www.docstoc.com/docs/14713854/Jared-Gold

When asked about his inspirations in a fan interview for his MySpace blog, Jared responded, “I deny the existence of a mold, it helps you feel much more free when designing. I am inspired by books, perfume, car rides, scents from this wild town as I drive through at night…I have thousands of books and I glean almost all of my design inspiration from my library. I also love to go to Disneyland by myself and sit in the crowd and sketch." http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=1602102&blogId=423865560
