Republican Jan Brewer is the governor of the state of Arizona. As the former Arizona secretary of state, she replaced former governor Janet Napolitano, who left the position to run the Department of Homeland Security in Barack Obama's presidential administration. Arizona's Constitution places the secretary of state second in line for the governorship, as opposed to most states' policy of naming the lieutenant governor successor.
