Shooting

Just before 1:00 p.m. local time on June 10, 2009, Von Brunn walked into the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, and pulled out a long rifle. According to reports, he almost immediately shot and killed Stephen Tyrone Johns, prompting two other security guards to return fire. Background

Von Brunn has a lengthy criminal record and is widely known in the white supremacist communities on the Internet. In 1981, he threatened members of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, stating that he was carrying a bomb and pulled out a shotgun. In his account of the situation, Von Brunn claims he was using a legal, non-violent, citizen's arrest as the Federal Reserve was in violation of the U.S. Constitution by controlling and issuing U.S. currency. Von Brunn's ex-wife spoke with the media anonymously, saying that his racial hatred has gone back for decades, at least since the pair first met in New York in the 1960s. She described him back then as a habitual drinker whose racial hatred "ate him alive like a cancer." The couple's son, Erik Von Brunn, a 32-year-old student at the University of Maryland, offered the following statement after the 2009 incident: "I love my father.
