Shields's first season was shaky, as he compiled a 6-8 record and a 4.84 ERA. However, 2007 was a breakout season for the young pitcher. With a 12-8 record, Shields won more than one-sixth of the Rays games that season. He was third in the American League for walks per innings pitched, and ninth in the league for strikeouts. In the first month and a half of the 2008 season, Shields had already pitched two shutouts.
