James Lonsdale Bryans was a British man who tried to negotiate a peace deal with Nazi Germany at the beginning of World War II. According to recently declassified documents, Bryans tried to negotiate safety for Britain and in exchange would have allowed Germany free reign over the rest of the world. The documents included MI5 memos discussing Bryans and his meetings. The memos showed that the British government was aware of his negotiations but did not prevent them. However, the scope of involvement of the British government in the diplomatic mission remains unclear.CNN: WWII diplomat proposed Britain, Germany split world (August 30, 2008)BBC News: Amateur diplomat sought Nazi pact (August 30, 2008)
