James Buchanan was the 15th President of the United States and the only President ever to come from the state of Pennsylvania. His presidency was characterized by the events precipitating the Civil War, including the secession of Southern states.
Timeline
- 1834-1845: Senator of Pennsylvania
- 1845-1849: 17th U.S. Secretary of State
- 1857-1861: 15th U.S. President
Legacy and Criticism
Buchanan, a supporter of slavery, deemed it illegal to declare war on the seceding Southern states (despite the fact that he also saw secession as illegal), and is therefore criticized by many historians for his inability to prevent the impending Civil War.
