Assassination
Political writer Charles J. Guiteau, who believed himself partly responsible for Garfields victory in the 1980 election, insisted that the president award him a political post. When Guiteau was refused, he purchased a .44 Webley British Bulldog revolver, and shot Garfield in the back at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station. Garfield had been waiting for a train to take him on a vacation to Longbranch, New Jersey. After eleven months of inadequate medical care, Garfield succumbed to infections. -
