Jamaica

Categories: Geography | Travel | Caribbean | Countries
  • Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean next to Cuba and Hispaniola. It was originally populated by South America's Arawaks, who were wiped out by Spanish occupiers in the early 1500s. Britain wrested the island from Spanish control in 1655. Jamaica became independent in 1962, but is still a member of the Commonwealth, an affiliated group of nations including the United Kingdom and many of its former colonies. It is a popular tourist domination, and known for its coffee, rum, and sugar. Musical styles like reggae, ska and dancehall have their origins in Jamaica. The Rastafarian religion was founded in Jamaica. It is the largest English speaking island.
