Jake Peavy is a starting pitcher for the San Diego Padres. In 2007, he was named the National League's starting pitcher for the 2007 All-Star Game and won the National League Cy Young Award.
According to ESPN, a deal to trade Peavy from the Padres to the Chicago White Sox was presented to Peavy, but was pending his approval as of May 21, 2009. Peavy's agent stated that Peavy is hesitant to sign off on the deal as he enjoys his life in California and would like to stay in the National League.ESPN.com: Jake Peavy to Chicago White Sox Deal Not a Sure Thing, Agent Says
Early Life
Jacob Edward Peavy was born in Mobile, Alabama, on May 31, 1981. He attended high school at St. Paul's Episcopal School where he garnered major league interest. Peavy was offered a spot on the Auburn University baseball team, but declined in favor of pursuing a career in Major League Baseball.
Pro Career
Peavy was drafted by the San Diego Padres during the 15th round of the 1999 Major League Baseball draft. He made his major league debut with the Padres on June 22, 2002. In 2004, Peavy established himself as the team's ace and went on to sign a four-year contract with the Padres in 2005. He helped lead the Padres to the post season in 2005, and in 2006, was named as a captain representing Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. In 2007, Peavy achieved the rare feat of winning the pitching triple crown with most wins, most strikeouts and lowest earned run average. For his exceptional season he was unanimously awarded the Cy Young Award for 2007.
2008 Off-Season
On November 5, 2008, news agencies reported that Peavy would prefer a trade to three undisclosed teams, and that the Padres were in the market to trade Peavy due to excessive payroll. The initial list of teams that Peavy reportedly will accept a trade to includes the Chicago Cubs, the Houston Astros the Los Angeles Dodgers, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the New York Yankees.ESPN.com: Peavy's agent dealing with seven teams (November 5, 2008)
On December 9, 2008, news agencies reported that a deal to send Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres to the Chicago Cubs was not "remotely close." The Cubs are believed to be looking for a left-handed bat before exploring a trade for a front-line pitcher. Another factor is the pending sale of the Cubs. The addition of Peavy's large contract could hinder a potential sale.ESPN.com: Source: Deal for Peavy not imminent (December 9, 2008)
