Delhomme attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He left the Ragin' Cajuns as the all-time passing leader with 655 completions and 1,246 attempts for 9,216 yards, 64 touchdowns and 57 interceptions. He was also the first Louisiana-Lafayette player to top 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons.

He started off the season as the backup quarterback to Rodney Peete, but Delhomme was put into the game half-way through the season opener.
