High School
Byrd graduated from Clayton High School where he became the Missouri 4A offensive player of the year, leading the Greyhounds to the 2004 state championship. He helped his team to a 13-1 record as a quarterback, safety, wide receiver and on special teams to reach the Suburban East Conference title.

College
He attended University of Oregon where he played three seasons as a cornerback before he declared to forego his senior season to enter the 2009 NFL Draft. He was a three year starter and made his best season in his junior year when he won defensive MVP award at the Holiday Bowl and first-team all-conference selection.
