Statistics
- There are three Statistics which represent the stuff of which your character is made. These are Body, Mind and Spirit.
- Body is your physical toughness and damage resistance. Your Body score dictates your Health. Health is a measure of how much damage you can take before dying.
- Spirit is your inner strength and magical power. Spirit dictates your Chi. Chi can be thought of as spiritual energy or mana. Chi is used for casting spells and healing.
- Mind represents your concentration and awareness. Mind dictates your Focus. Focus is a measure of your concentration in combat. Focus is used to wield weapons and to enter Focus Mode. Focus Mode slows your opponents and allows you to act faster at the cost of draining your Focus.
- The three battle stats (Health, Chi and Focus) can be recovered by picking up red, blue and yellow orbs dropped by enemies during combat. They can also be replenished at Spirit Fonts and Focus Shrines.
- Your three main Statistics also dictate your social abilities. These are Intimidation, Charm and Intuition. These are used in dialog situations in order to resolve conflicts or obtain certain information/items. Intimidation is linked to Body. Charm is linked to Mind. Intuition is linked to Focus. Your Social skills will rise with your main Stats.
- You will have the opportunity to add additional Stat points as you level your character. They can be placed anywhere you wish. Think about the character you wish to create. Melee fighters will need more Body than anything else. Spell Casters will need more Spirit. Weapon fighters will need more Focus.
- TIP: Try to spread Stat points out. Investing heavily in one area will leave your character weak in others.
Styles
- There are a multitude of martial arts Styles in Jade Empire. They can be divided into four categories. Martial, Support, Weapon, Transformation and Magical. Each one is useful in certain situations or against certain foes.
- Martial Styles are melee attacks and are useful against any opponent. They are particularly useful against Ghosts. They typically do moderate damage.
- Support Styles do no damage. They have other helpful effects like slowing the enemy or draining their Chi. Support Styles can do low damage with Chi Strikes.
- Weapon Styles do high damage to human and demon targets. They slowly drain your Focus when used. Ghosts are immune to Weapon Styles.
- Magical Styles are ranged attacks that do moderate damage. They are useful against human and Ghost targets. Demons are immune to Magical Styles. Using Magical Styles drains your Chi.
- Transformation Styles allow you to take the form of the animal from which you learned the Style. Examples are Toad Demon, Horse Demon and Jade Golem. Transformation Styles are extremely powerful. They continuously use Chi. The transformation will reverse if you change Styles or run out of Chi.
Morality
- Jade Empire is filled with moral choices. You will be given many opportunities to prove your virtue or your evil. Neither is inherently better than the other. They are simply two different means to an end.
- Certain friendly characters will react differently to different moral decisions. Dawn Star will be outraged at evil choices while The Black Whirlwind will love them.
- There are two moral paths to follow. The way of the Open Palm and the way of the Closed Fist. The Open Palm (OP) is the virtuous or high path. The Closed Fist (CF) is the low or wicked path.
- Remaining neutral is an option, though not recommended. Certain Gems require you to be a follower of either Open Palm or Closed Fist. If you remain neutral, you cannot use them. We highly recommend choosing one or the other to follow.
- Almost all dialog is an opportunity to earn Open Palm or Closed Fist points. The upper dialog options are typically OP. The lower options are typically CF.

Followers
- You will encounter several characters in the game that will join your cause. Each one has special talents and a story to tell.
- You can set most of your followers to Attack or Support mode. Attack mode gives you an extra person to kill enemies. Support mode gives you a bonus when fighting. Support mode is almost universally better.
- Each follower has a story to tell that is revealed by speaking to them. Speaking to them often will result in a much better understanding of who they are and a much richer game experience.
- Two of your followers, Kang the Mad and Zin Bu, have special uses. Kang the Mad controls your flying machine and can take you places if you ask. Zin Bu, your personal Celestial Accountant, acts as a convenient merchant. He is available whenever you need him at any point in the game after you find him.
- Note: Zin Bu's prices are different than other merchants. His prices are higher and his buyback rates are lower. Do not sell him anything unless you have to.
- Certain followers will react differently to certain moral choices you make. This has no bearing on their loyalty, but can provide some interesting dialog.
Romance
- Your character can fall in love with certain followers of yours. The available characters are: Dawn Star, Silk Fox and Sky.
- Romances are furthered through dialog options. It is generally pretty obvious if the character is making an advance on you. If you want to have a romance with them, respond favorably. Rebuke them if you don't.
Combat
- Most enemies will block. Jump behind them or use a power attack to break their block.
- Jump behind crowds of enemies. Do not let yourself be surrounded.
- Jumping and dodging is the best way to keep yourself alive.
- Weapon Styles work well against groups of human enemies. You have a chance to hit multiple enemies at once.
- Use an area of effect (AoE) attack by pressing A and X at the same time. This is useful if you get surrounded by multiple opponents.
- Jade Golem Style makes a mockery of just about everything. Use it on boss fights to make them easy.
- Use Chi Heal (white button) when you drop below 60% Health.
- Use a power attack with the Ice Shard Style to freeze human opponents. This gives you several seconds to hit them without fear of retaliation.
Enemy Types
- There are several basic enemy types that you will come across. Within each general type are several different subtypes of enemy. These will be explained as they occur.
- Human enemies are generally weak and can be damaged with any type of attack. All Styles work well against human enemies. Weapon Styles work particularly well.
- Ogres are larger and slower versions of humans. They hit very hard. They are vulnerable to Magical and Weapon Styles. Try and stay behind them.
- Demons are immune to Magical and Support Styles. They range in size from the small Rat Demons to the monstrous Elephant Demons. They are tough, powerful and extremely dangerous. Stay behind them at all times. Weapon and Martial Styles work well against Demons.
- Ghosts are immune to Weapon Styles. Martial and Magical Styles work best against them. Try and stay behind them. Almost all Ghosts have some sort of Magical attack. Avoid these if you can.
- NOTE: Lost Souls have a seeking attack that cannot be dodged. Look for a pair of green projectiles coming from them. Block these attacks.
- Zombies are similar to both Ghosts and Humans. They can easily be defeated with Weapon Styles.
Loot
- There is plenty of loot lying around just waiting to be taken. This usually manifests in Bones, Bamboo Casks and Chests. You will not be penalized for opening these. If you see one, open it.
- Make sure to check every area you enter for loot.
- Many loot drops are random. Though the Chest is always in the same place, it's contents may vary.
- NOTE: Many chests and casks in the game are trapped. If you have any Focus available, you may be able to evade the trap. There are also gems that reduce the Focus cost of evading traps and guarantee your evasion every time. These are not necessary but can be helpful.
Character Creation
- There are several character types which you can start with. They are: Fast, Magic, Balanced and Strong. Fast and Balanced have both Male and Female versions while Magic is female and Strong is male.
- NOTE: The Monk character is available in the Special Edition only.
- Fast characters use less Focus in battle but are not as strong or magically-inclined as others. Fast characters excel at using Martial Styles.
- Magic characters use less Chi for elemental strikes and magic spells. They excel at using Magical Styles.
- Strong characters trade Chi and Focus for Body. They excel at using Weapon and Martial Styles.
- Balanced characters are Jacks of all Trades. They are equally proficient in all Styles.
- You can either use a pre-made character or customize your own.
- Select a character type and press Y to customize.
- Allocate your four Stat points as you see fit.
- Choose a Martial Style. There are four choices. Thousand Cuts, Leaping Tiger, White Demon and Legendary Strike. Thousand Cuts and Leaping Tiger are fast but weak. White Demon and Legendary Strike are slow but powerful. Press X to select the Style you want.
- NOTE: You will acquire more Styles as you progress.
- Choose a name for your character.
- Review your character. This is your last chance to make changes.
- Press A to accept.

Transformation Styles also work well. Chai Ka will speak to you after you hurt him a bit. He will continue fighting. Keep hitting him until he stops attacking. Chai Ka will join you when you tell him who you are. He will also give you the Inscrutible Power Source. You will need this for later.
- Choose to either use Chai Ka now or send him back to Tien's Landing.
- Loot the area. Make sure to read the scroll at the small gazebo.
- Go up to the Golems. Give them the password Shao Hua. You now have access to the dam.
- NOTE: This is your last chance to finish any Sidequests involving the ruins. Complete them now if you have any left.
- Go past the golems. Approach the jade figurine at the far end.
- Make your choice. Close the dam for OP points. This will flood the ruins and save Tien's Landing. It will also anger Merchant Jiang and earn a reward from Captain Ing. Smash the controls for CF points. This will leave the ruins open. It will also earn you a lot of Silver from Merchant Jiang.
- Save.
- Go back up the stairs. You will be confronted by a Sergeant, a Lotus Assassin and some Soldiers.
- Kill the Lotus Assassin first. Use Weapon or Transformation Styles to make him and the Soldiers easy.
- Kill the Sergeant next. He is tougher than the Soldiers. He also has powerful spear attacks. Use Magical Styles to keep him at a distance.
- Use the switch in the gazebo to open a shortcut back to Tien's Landing.
- Go across the bridge. Head back to Tien's Landing.
- NOTE: You may encounter Silk Fox on your way back. This will put the Silk Fox quest in your log. You will also encounter a messenger from Captain Ing if you saved the town. He will give you a reward for saving the town.
- Head towards the Teahouse. You may encounter Merchant Jiang if you saved the town. He will either reward you or attack you. Kill him first if he attacks you. Weapon and Transformation Styles will finish him and his Thugs quickly.
- Talk to Hui in the Teahouse. This closes her quest line.
- Talk to Merchant Cheung in the main square. He will have items for purchase if you saved the dam.
- TIP: Give Merchant Cheung his Clay Figurine if you haven't already.
- Look for Old Wei near Merchant Cheung. Speak to him to learn his story. Give him the Cameo Portrait for OP points.
- Speak to Minister Sheng for some funny dialog.
Finding a New Flyer
- Head down to Beggar's Pier. Look for Ru by the docks.
- Speak to Ru. He will take you to the pirate island.
- Head down the path. You will see a cutscene of some young pirates berating an older pirate. There is also a slave mopping the dock.
- Approach the old pirate. Speak to him.
- Make a choice. You can either cut the rope or fight the pirates. Cutting the rope kills the slave and earns you CF points. Fighting the pirates just gets them out of the way. You do not get OP points for killing the pirates by hand.
- Kill the pirates if you chose not to cut the rope. Space is limited on the docks. Use evade to get behind the pirates. Use Weapon Styles to make the fight easier.
- Speak to the slave if you rescued him. Release him for OP points or kill him for CF points.
- Speak to the old pirate for some info on Gao the Greater's exploits.
- Follow the wooden planks up to the next platform.
- Save before you get there.
- Kill the pirates. This is tricky. There are several (6-8) pirates. There are also several braziers around. These will light you on fire if you hit them. Use Transformation or Magical Styles to keep the pirates from surrounding you. Use Ice Shard to freeze pirates if you can.
- Loot the platform.
- Continue up the stairs when you are ready.
- Kill the slavers. There will only be a few of them. Use Weapon Styles to bring them down quickly.
- Speak to the man in blue. His name is Sky and he is your newest follower.
- Loot the room.
- Spring the slaves in the cage. Remember the lady and her daughter who were leaving Tien's Landing? That's them. The daughter has been captured. You will rescue her shortly.
- Go up the stairs. Sky will flip the switch for you. Inspect the door to open the lock.
Rescue Time
- Go through the door. You will be confronted by more Slavers. Beware your surroundings. Quarters are tight for this fight.
- TIP: Refill at the Spirit Font.
- Continue up the walkway. Watch the cutscene.
- Enter the building. Kill the Thugs.
- Speak to the man with the hat. He is Kang the Mad. He is also your newest recruit and Flyer expert.
- Loot the room.
- Go up the stairs in the back.
- Look to your left. You will see a switch at the bottom of some stairs. Throw it to lower a bridge. This is not necessary but makes trips back quicker.
- Go back and use the Spirit Font and Focus Shrine now if you are low.
- Continue up the stairs.
- Fight the pirates on the platform. There are not many of them. They are easy prey for your Weapon.
- Save.
- Head into the cave at the northwest corner.
- Kill the Slavers. You now have to speak to the slave buyer and Fuyao. This conversation determines which Style you receive. It also determines whether you earn OP or CF points.
- Tell the buyer "the girl is not for sale" to earn OP points and the Iron Palm Style.
- Tell the buyer I am selling the slaves for CF points and the Viper Style.
- Convince Fuyao to kill the buyer for CF points. Tell her she should be proud to earn the Viper Style.
- Continue up the stairs to the next platform. There will be more pirates for you to kill.
- Go through the workshop to the north. You will be attacked by a pair of Rat Demons and a pair of Horse Demons. The Rat Demons are easily dispatched with Weapons. The Horse Demons are much more dangerous. They use fire attacks. Jump behind them. Hit them with power and Weapon attacks from the rear. Keep dodging to stay behind them.
- Kill the Ogre that enters. Do what you must to avoid being hit by the Ogre. His one attack is a sweeping weapon stroke. It hits like a truck. Dodge to get behind him. Hit him with Weapon or Transformation Styles.
- TIP: Look for the Marvelous Dragonfly Controls. Use these to drop the flyer to the ground. Use it's guns to blast the wall. This opens up Gao's treasure trove. It is guarded by an Elephant Demon. Use hit-and-run Weapon attacks to bring it down. Beware it's AoE attack. Loot the trove when the demon is dead.
- Continue through the open door.
- Go back and use the Spirit Font or Focus Shrine if you are low.
- Follow the stairs up to Gao the Greater.
- Run around his room before you enter. There is a Bonsai Tree at the far end. Kick it for a Gem.
- Confront Gao the Greater. He has three Grunts and uses fire Magic. Kill his Grunts first. Use Ice Shard to freeze him if you can. Use Transformation or Weapon Styles to whittle him down quickly. Hit him with Spirit Thief if you run low on Chi.
- Loot the room.
- TIP: You should find the Zither Case. This is for The Zither of Discord.
- NOTE: You will receive the Strength of Wood Technique if you read all three volumes of The History of Flight.
- Return to the Marvelous Dragonfly. Speak to Kang if you are ready to leave.
- Fight the enemy flyers if you wish. You can also Evade them to save time.
- Talk to everyone at your camp.
The Sickened Forest
- Head through Tien's Landing. The entrance to the forest is right behind the Guard who gives you the quest to help. He is near Minister Sheng.
- TIP: Go talk to Scholar Six Heavens if you are playing a CF character. He needs one more piece for the Zither, which can be found in the forest.
- Go up the path into the forest.
- Fight the Ghosts. Most of them are nothing you haven't seen before. You will now encounter Lost Souls. Attack them close up. They have several ranged attacks that hurt. Staying close to them helps negate the effects of their ranged attacks. Never fight them face to face.
- Speak to Lord Yun. He will enlist your help in getting rid of the ghosts in the forest. Come to an arrangement where you trade your help for a Wind Map.
- Continue up the path. You will encounter several more Ghosts and some Lost Souls.
- Locate the Shrine at the center of the area. Step near it to activate anti-Ghost defenses. These will damage any spirits that wander into them.
- NOTE: This area has a continually-respawning group of Ghosts. You can gain potentially unlimited XP by sitting here and killing Ghosts. This takes a long time but can make the end of the game ridiculously easy.
- Kill the Ghosts.
- TIP: Head east if you are playing a CF character. You will find the ghost of Bladed Thesis. Speak to him. Scholar Six Heavens will appear. Speak to Bladed Thesis again. You will gain Silver, XP and the Chaotic Strains technique. This will complete The Zither of Discord Sidequest. Return to the clearing.
- Head north up the path. You will see man being attacked by Ghosts. Defeat the Ghosts.
- Speak to the man. He will encourage you to go visit the Pilgrim's Rest Inn.
- TIP: Keep an eye out for Headstones along the path. Many of them contain Silver or Gems.
- Continue up the road until you hit a fork. The east path leads to the Pilgrim's Rest Inn. The western path leads to the Temple of the Forest Shadow.
- Go up the temple path.
Forest Shadow
- Head west at the next fork. This path leads to the temple courtyard.
- Fight The Black Whirlwind. He is big and tough, but slow. Get behind him. Use Magical or Weapon Styles to defeat him.
- Speak to Spear Catches Leaf. He is standing behind The Black Whirlwind.
- TIP: Spear Catches Leaf sells some very nice Techniques.
- Read the scrolls in the temple.
- Head north to leave the temple. This path leads around to the front of the Pilgrim's Rest Inn.
- Head into the Inn.
- Speak to the Inn Keeper. Your objective here is to get the Temple Crystal from him. Get it however you wish. There are several dialog options that will put the crystal in your possession.
- Loot the inn. There are several casks about. There is also a scroll on the upper level.
- Speak to Henpecked Hou. He offers some funny dialog but not much else. He will have more for you later.
- TIP: Good Conversation Skills will allow you to get more from Hou. He will direct you to ask the Inn Keeper about servants of The Mother. Do so. The Inn Keeper will reveal his true form. You will have to fight a group of Cannibals. They are small and weak. Use Weapon Styles to kill them quickly.
- Return to the temple.
- Speak to Spear Catches Leaf again. You will receive The Black Whirlwind as a follower. He is very powerful, but slow. You can choose to bring him along or send him back to camp.
- Go to the pedestal. Insert the crystal into the pedestal.
- Go down the path. Activate the two furnaces to produce light beams.
- Head east to the tower. Click the Red switch.
- Head to the west tower. Click the Blue switch.
- Return to the pedestal. Click it to open the portal to Heaven.
- Enter Heaven. You will meet Zin Bu. You now have a merchant available whenever you need one.
- TIP: Check Zin Bu's stock regularly. He stocks new items throughout the game.
- Head up the path. Help the Foxes kill the Demons that intrude.
- Continue up the path. There will be three more Demon intrusions. The Foxes are there to respond as well. Use Martial Styles to defeat the Demons. You can also just sit back and let the Foxes do the work.
- Speak to the Forest Shadow. She is at the top of the hill. You can choose to fight her for CF points or help her for OP points. Agreeing to help allows you to leave peacefully. Select the "I'll walk" option.
- TIP: Read the scroll behind Forest Shadow.
- Choosing to fight Forest Shadow means fighting her Elephant Demon and every Fox you came across on the way up. Use Weapon, Martial or Transformation Styles on all of them.
- TIP: Stay behind the Elephant Demon. His attacks are slow but very powerful. Staying behind him will avoid nearly all of his attacks.
- Head down the way you came. Be sure to grab any loot you missed on the way up. There will be Foxes to fight at each clearing if you chose the CF path. They are fast and dangerous. Use Weapons to defeat them quickly.
- Kill Forest Shadow if you chose the CF path. Fight her as you did the other Foxes. Make sure you stay behind her as much as possible.
- Leave Heaven.
The Mother
- Return to the Inn. The Inn Keeper and his Cannibals will attack if they haven't already. Kill the big one first. The big Cannibal uses Magical Styles. Use Weapon or Transformation Styles to send him packing.
- You now have the option to bring Henpecked Hou along. His only use is the Drunken Master Style. You will receive a short tutorial on how to use this after you speak to him.
- NOTE: Drunken Master Style is highly effective against large crowds. It is also highly erratic. It takes a long time to kill single enemies. Feel free to use it or ignore it.
- Go to the rear of the inn. You will find a portion of the wall is now open.
- Enter the caves.
- Kill the Cannibals. They are the same as the ones you fought at the Inn. You will come across a man after you defeat the Cannibals. He will turn into a Cannibal. This is unavoidable. Kill him mercifully or slaughter him for CF points.
- Continue through the cave. You will encounter more Cannibals and some Rat Demons. Use Weapon Styles to make short work of them.
- Go across the bridge. Leave through the northwest tunnel. Now you have to fight The Mother.
- TIP: Ignore The Mother and all the Cannibals. All you need to do is destroy three of the four pillars in the room to kill everything. Any three will do. Hit them with the fastest attacks you have. Weapon Styles and Thousand Cuts work well.
- Speak to Forest Shadow. She shows up no matter which path you followed. Berate her if you killed her. Accept her gift if you helped her.
- Fight Inquisitor Lim when he shows up.
- NOTE: Inquisitor Lim will appear wherever your last quest is (the dam, Gao's fortress or the forest.) If you have followed this guide, he will appear in the forest.
- Use Weapon and Transformation Styles on Inquisitor Lim. He favors strength over speed. Stay behind him if you use Weapon Styles. Kill his minions first.
- NOTE: Killing Inquisitor Lim will earn the second piece of your Dragon Amulet. You may now equip five Gems.
- Return to Lord Yun's camp. Speak to Lord Yun to obtain the Wind Map.
- Return to Tien's Landing.
An Ancient Game Sidequest
- Speak to Mistress Vo or Jian the Iron Fist. You will be light or dark enough to obtain their training now. You will have to fight whoever you choose to follow. Both of them use their Martial Style. Use Weapon or Transformation Styles to defeat them. Make sure you stay behind them. Watch out for AoE attacks.
- Quest complete.
Chai Jin's Food Sidequest
- Refill your Health, Chi and Focus.
- Sell some excess Gems if you don't have 600 Silver. You will need 600 for the next Sidequest.
- Go to the Teahouse.
- Go to the upper level. Look for a cook named Chai Jin at the far end. He will offer to make you some dishes from his home.
- Try each one of his three dishes. He will challenge you again to try his third dish. Do so. Tell him it depleted every aspect of your being. You will receive your Silver and The Bronze Tongue Gem.
- Quest complete.
Bei and Ai Ling Sidequest
- Go to the Boathouse down on the docks.
- Speak to the Guard. Tell him you are coming to speak to Ai Ling about Bei. He will let you in.
- Make a choice. There are two ways to finish this quest. The OP route opens another quest (and more XP) for you. The CF route closes the quest and does not allows the follow-up quest.
- TIP: Consider taking the OP route for this quest even if you are a follower of the Closed Fist. The Open Palm route offers more in terms of rewards.
- Loot the outer rooms of the Boathouse. There are some casks and scrolls.
- Go into the main room to speak to Ai Ling. Convince her to speak to Bei. This will bring Bei, Seamstress Lan and Ai Ling together.
- TIP: You can also threaten Ai Ling. She and her Thugs will attack you. Kill them to complete this quest for CF points.
- TIP: Killing Ai Ling prevents you from starting the Matchmaker Sidequest.
- Use a Conversation Skill (any will work) to convince Ai Ling to let Lan and Bei go. This closes The Beaten Baker Sidequest and opens up the Matchmaker Sidequest.
- Loot the room. You will find some Silver (maybe a Gem or two), some scrolls and a Key. Use the Key to unlock the gate in the northwest corner of the room. You can loot the office upstairs. You can also go down into the dock and loot the casks at the far end.
- Speak to Ai Ling when you are ready to continue The Matchmaker.
- Offer to help Ai Ling find a husband. There are three possible husbands for Ai Ling. Chumin The Craftsman, Yaoru and Big Tian.
- Speak to Chumin to do things the easy way. Leave the Boathouse and take a left. Chumin is down at the end of the docks. Convince him Ai Ling would be a good business partner. He will return and speak to Ai Ling. Tell Ai Ling he is a kind and talented man. Remind Chumin that Ai Ling is a powerful businesswoman. They will hit it off immediately. This is the quickest and easiest way to complete the Matchmaker. It nets you some Silver and 1,000 XP.
- Speak to Yaoru. He is the snooty man on the upper level of the Teahouse. It will require some convincing (however you choose to do it) to get Ai Ling to settle for him. This route nets you 1,020 XP and some Silver.
- Speak to Big Tian. He is just outside. Leave the Boathouse and take a right. He is simple and kind, but is a mismatch for Ai Ling. It will also take some persuasion to get Ai Ling to settle for Big Tian. This nets you some Silver and 1,060 XP.
- TIP: Time and effort considered, hooking Ai Ling up with Chumin is the best way to go.
- Quest complete.
Leaving Tien's Landing
- Return to your camp.
- Speak to all your followers.
- Speak to Kang when you are ready to leave. This will take you to the Imperial City.
- NOTE: Kang may offer you a Sidequest to undertake more flyer missions. These will result in more upgrades for the Marvelous Dragonfly and some more XP. They are completely optional. They play exactly like the first flyer mission you ran.
The Market District
- Speak to Silk Fox. She will ask to meet you at the Scholar's Garden.
- TIP: Choose the lowest dialog options when you speak to her. This will cause her handmaidens to faint. It will also earn you a few CF points and the Loutish Approval Technique.
- Accept the handmaiden's gift. You will receive the location of your meeting with Silk Fox and a very nice Gem.
- NOTE: Speak to Kang if you wish to start some more Marvelous Dragonfly missions.
- Speak to all of your followers.
- Leave the courtyard. Take a left.
- Speak to Captain Sen. He is one of the soldiers at the gate. Ask him about bounties. He will tell you about Creative Yukong and Fading Moon.
- Head west to the Arena entrance.
- TIP: Go to the end of the walkway and look for a cask. Loot it for Configuration of the Dragon. This is needed for Kang's Sidequest.
- Head south over the bridge. Go east. Look for the blacksmith shop. It is a wooden door set in the wall.
- Buy an upgrade for your weapon here. You can also buy a Bar of Nickeled Iron. You'll need this for Kang's Sidequest.
- Head southeast to reach The Golden Way.
The Outlander Sidequest
- Head down the street.
- TIP: There are a lot of scrolls here. Make sure you read them. Read a scroll again if you are unsure if you read it.
- Look for the man shouting insults at people. Approach him and speak to him.
- Say anything you like. You will not receive CF or OP points for your dialog here. After a few lines, the master will approach. He will enlist your aid in eliminating a troublesome foreigner. Accept his request.
- Continue up the street. Silk Fox will meet you at the Scholar's Garden. She will explain that you must infiltrate the Lotus Assassins to gain the knowledge you seek. You can do this three ways. You can impress the Inquisitors by performing a task. You can also impress the Executioners by winning the Silver Championship in the arena. Or you can do both.
- Loot the platform. You will find some loot and a pair of Soldiers with bad attitudes. Kill the Soldiers.
- Continue on into the garden.
- Read every scroll you see.
- TIP: Speak to Scholar Dongow. Press him for information on the Lotus Assassins. He will have a representative meet you at your flyer.
- Approach the group of people at the far end to find the outlander, Sir Roderick Ponce Von Fontlebottom the Magnificent Bastard (voiced by none other than Monty Python John Cleese!)
- Accept Sir Roderick's challenge. You will need to make several arguments to sway five judges to your side. If at any time you win over all five judges, you win the contest. Each Judge has a specific argument they respond to. Speak to each of the judges to learn which argument they favor.
- There are two ways to win the debate in three responses. Your arguments can be presented in any order. First: choose Sympathetic, Dismissive and Factual arguments. Second: choose Mocking, Factual and Raging. Either of these methods will win the argument.
- Sir Roderick will challenge you to a duel. He will do this even if you lose the argument.
- Speed is essential when fighting Sir Roderick. His gun, Mirabelle, is extremely powerful. It has a slow rate of fire. Charge him immediately. Try to stay as close to him as possible. Hit him with your Weapon, then dodge. Keep dodging when you are not hitting.
- Choose a reward from Sir Roderick when you defeat him. His weapon Mirabelle is a very powerful but very slow combat Style. The next three rewards will give you +3 Body, +3 Mind and +3 Spirit techniques respectively. The final response gives you The Silver Tongue Gem. This grants a +6 bonus to each Conversation Skill. We recommend either Mirabelle or any of the techniques. You may find The Silver Tongue later.
- Speak to the Minister of Culture. He will give you a reward for ridding the garden of Sir Roderick.
- Quest complete.
Creative Yukong Sidequest
- Explore the garden. Make sure you read all the scrolls.
- Speak to Scholar Kongyu. Go through all of his dialog options. You will eventually be able to question his identity. This reveals that he is in fact Creative Yukong.
- Make a choice. You can either help Yukong escape the city or you can turn him in. You can also pretend to help him escape, then turn him in. Select the option to take him in/help him now. This transports you to the gate.
- Speak to Captain Sen. Tell him Yukong got away for OP points. You can also finger Yukong at any time for CF points.
- Quest complete.
- Return to your followers. You will be approached by the Inquisitor. He will outline what he needs you to do to gain his favor. There are two ways to do this.
- NOTE: Killing Sheng or Fang will NOT earn the Inquisitor's approval.
- Speak to your followers.
The Slave Traders Sidequest
- Head to the southwest corner of the Markets. Look for Prefect Jitong. Speak to him to learn his situation. This starts The Slave Traders Sidequest.
- Go to the Imperial Arena.
- Look for Zi Bao in the second room of the upper level. Speak to him. Ask him about the slave traders. Intimidate him to secure the meeting. You may have to bribe him with some Silver. He will lead you to the slavers.
- Kill the Slavers. There are only three of them. They are all human. Weapons kill them quickly.
- Speak to the Leader. He will offer to make you part of the outfit. Accept his offer for CF points. You can also refuse and kill him for OP points. He will give you a Forged Slaver Document if you agree to join him. You receive the regular Slaver Document if you kill him.
- Return to Prefect Jitong with the document. Give him the Forged document for CF points. Give him the regular document for OP points.
- Quest complete.
The Play's the Thing Sidequest
- Return to The Golden Way.
- Look for a man named Incisive Chorus. He will be near the entrance. Speak to him to learn his plight. Agree to help him.
- Head up the Golden Way until you are stopped by a man named Phong. He will give you a revised copy of the script.
- NOTE: You will receive CF points for performing the revised script. You will also receive considerably less Silver and less XP. Performing the original script results in more Silver, more XP and no morality points. Performing the original script is strongly recommended unless you want to see Phong arrested by the Lotus Assassins.
- The script reads as:
- White Banners Fly.
- Either way, the dusk was slipping into night (original) OR Tien's Decision was made... (revised.)
- He stood at the edge of a vast plain.
- Heaven's reach is wide (original) OR The Flower Guardians... (revised.)
- He returned to the Heavens...
- A shooting star traced the border of our lands...
- Speak to Incisive Chorus when the play is finished.
- Quest complete.
Pleasing the Inquisitor, Method 1
- Speak to Henpecked Hou. He will suggest substituting rotten turtle eggs for Sheng's gift.
- Approve his plan.
- Go to the Hostel in The Golden Way. It is open now.
- Speak to Minister Sheng. Use the Charm or Intuition options (whichever is your highest) to switch his gift for the turtle eggs. This will disgrace Minister Sheng and win the Inquisitor's approval.
- NOTE: This earns you CF points.
- Return to your followers.
- Quest complete.
Pleasing the Inquisitor, Method 2
- Go to the Imperial Arena.
- Go to the second level.
- Find the third room (the walls will open as you near them.)
- Look for a woman named Gentle Breezes in the corner. Speak to her.
- Use your Conversation Skills to convince Gentle Breezes to steal Minister Fang's signet ring.
- TIP: You can also bribe her with 900 Silver to convince her to move to a better life. This also gets her to steal the ring.
- Speak to the guards in front of Fang once you have the ring. They will let you pass.
- Speak to Fang. Demand his resignation. Tell him you will discredit him by publicizing his perversions. He will give in and give you his letter of resignation.
- NOTE: This earns you OP points.
- Return to your followers.
- Quest complete.
- TIP: Compete in the arena while you're here. There is plenty of combat XP and loot to be had by fighting. There are also some Sidequests that are only opened by arena competition.
The Imperial Arena Sidequest
- Speak to Promoter Qui. He is the man who sets up the arena matches (and is voiced by actor Brian Doyle-Murray.)
- Speak to the Lotus Assassin in the first room. He will tell you to win the Silver Round if you want to impress him.
- NOTE: You cannot have a follower with you in the arena.
- TIP: Save after each match. There is a prize at the end for having a perfect arena record (no losses.) Reload if you lose a match.
- You will fight a variety of different opponents in the arena. A variety of tactics will be necessary.
- Speak to the other fighters between each match. Some have insults, others have useful information.
The Qualifying Rounds Sidequest
- You must prove you have a place in the arena before you can compete there.
- Your first match is against an Ogre. Kill it like you've killed every other Ogre up until now. It is not any tougher than any other Ogre you've fought.
- Your second match is against four students. They are no tougher than the students you faced at Two Rivers. Use whatever tactics you wish to defeat them.
- The third qualifying round pits you against a statue. The statue does not move or attack you in any way. Your job is to destroy it inside of 30 seconds. Use repeated Weapon attacks to do this.
- TIP: Only use regular attacks against the statue. Power attacks are slow and waste too much time.
- Your final qualifying round has you fighting Hapless Han. He is a mook like any other human you have fought. He is pitifully weak. Defeat him with any Style you wish.
- Quest complete.
The Bronze Rounds Sidequest
- These rounds are tougher than the Qualifying Rounds, but not any tougher than any enemies you have faced so far.
- Your first Bronze fight is against a group of Cannibals and their boss. This is exactly like the fight at the Pilgrim's Rest Inn. Kill the boss first. Use Weapon Styles to kill them all quickly.
- Your second Bronze fight is not really a fight. The arena is filled with traps that shoot ice and fire at you. Your job is to dodge them and stay alive for 50 seconds.
- TIP: Go as far down (towards the bottom of the screen) as you can. Run back and forth. Evade as needed. You may also want to equip some +Body Gems before this round.
- TIP: Stay out of the center. There is a spike trap in the center that will raise if you step on it.
- Your third Bronze fight is against a Toad Demon. Evade to get behind it. Use Weapon and Martial Styles to kill it.
A Bronzed Opportunity Sidequest
- Talk to Lucky Cho. Lucky is the current manager of the arena. He is also a member of The Guild. He offers to poison your next opponent, Crimson Khana to ensure your victory. Refuse his offer for OP points or accept it for CF points.
- Speak to Crimson Khana if you are playing an OP character. Tell her Lucky Cho tried to have her poisoned for more OP points.
- Fight Crimson Khana. She uses a twin-sword Weapon Style. She is very fast and exceptionally dangerous. Use Magical Styles to keep her at a distance. Ice Shard works very well for this. Dodge as much as needed to keep her far away. Defeating Crimson Khana will earn you the Eyes of the Dragon Weapon Style. You will earn the Crimson Tears Weapon Style (which is better) if you warned her about the poisoning. Defeating Crimson Khana also bumps you up to the Silver Rounds.
- Quest complete.
The Gambler's Favor Sidequest
- NOTE: This is the last set of arena matches you need to complete to win the Executioner's favor. But since you're already here, you may as well finish them all and get more loot.
- Go to the tavern in the arena. Speak to Gambler Daoshen. He will ask you to requisition Sweet Poison Lyn for a larger stake in the gambling. He will give you 500 Silver for the application.
- Go to Lucky Cho's room to find Sweet Poison Lyn. Tell her about Gambler Daoshen. Give her the money.
- Return to Gambler Daoshen and give him the good news.
- Quest Complete.
- NOTE: You can gamble at Gambler Daoshen if you wish.
The Serpent and The Black Whirlwind Sidequest
- Speak to Kai Lan The Serpent. Go through Lucky Cho's room to find him. The Serpent will ask you to join The Guild. You will be interrupted by The Black Whirlwind, who has something important to tell you.
- Listen to Whirlwind's story. You will be interrupted by The Serpent. Fight him. You will receive some Silver and a Gem.
- Quest complete.
The Second Silver Round Sidequest
- Your second Silver fight is against four Guild Assassins. Each of them have attacks that can poison you. It is very important to fight them one at a time. Do not let yourself be surrounded. Use Magical or Transformation Styles on them. Magic will keep them at a distance. Transformation Styles like Toad Demon will make you immune to their poison.
- NOTE: You can actually die in this fight (the arena wards do not affect poison.) Keep your health high.
- Quest complete.
The Third Silver Round Sidequest
- Your third Silver fight is against three Clay Golems. They are very powerful but very slow. Use Weapon Styles to destroy them. Hit-and-run attacks work best. Do not face a golem head on.
Final Silver Round: Iron Soldier Sidequest
- Your final Silver fight is against the Silver champion, Iron Soldier. Speak to him before the match if you poisoned Crimson Khana. He will make you an offer if you are following the Closed Fist. Accept his offer to kill General Stone Kao (if you follow the CF path.)
- NOTE: Start the fight if you are a follower of the Open Palm.
- Leave the arena. Go to the gates where Captain Sen is.
- Speak to General Stone Kao. He will attack you. Kill him. He has no allies and is easily dispatched with Weapon Styles.
- Return to Iron Soldier. Tell him the deed is done.
- Fight Iron Soldier. He will not fight back much if you did his dirty work. Use Weapon, Magical or Transformation Styles on him if you follow the Open Palm. Hit him with anything if you did his errand.
- Speak to Iron Soldier after the fight if you did his errand.
- Quest complete.
The First Gold Round Sidequest
- These fights are a good deal tougher than other fights. The opponents are stronger and use some very powerful Styles.
- TIP: Set the difficulty lower in the Options menu if you find yourself being beaten repeatedly.
- Your first Gold match is against a master of Phoenix Unity style. Hit her with Martial Styles first to bring her down. She will split into six fighters. Use Magical or Weapon Styles to continue the fight. Use AoE attacks liberally to keep them from surrounding you.
- Quest complete.
The Second Gold Round Sidequest
- Your second Gold match is against the Brothers Sung. Kill Sung Sui first. He uses flame magic and is the most dangerous. Kill Sung Bo next. His Monkey Paw Style is very fast. Use Magical Styles to keep him at a distance. Kill Sung Bu last. He uses swords and is the least dangerous. Use AoE attacks to keep the brothers from ganging up on you.
The Third Gold Round Sidequest
- Your third Gold match is composed of eight opponents in succession with a 10 second break in between each. You will fight: an Ogre, Hapless Han, a Toad Demon, Iron Soldier, an Elephant Demon, Sung Bo, Sung Bu and Sung Sui (in that order.) Use the same strategies you used to beat them before. Use only your most powerful Styles to defeat them. The biggest danger here is taking too long and facing multiple opponents. Kill them as quickly as you can.
- TIP: Set the difficulty level lower if you can't pull this off. This is one of the harder fights in the game.
- TIP: Equip any gems that increase the chance of power-ups dropping.
- Quest complete.
The Final Gold Round: The Ravager Sidequest
- Fight the Ravager. He is the reigning champion. He is fast, tough and powerful. There are two ways to fight him that make him laughably easy.
- Skip him for now. Continue on to the Lotus Assassin fortress quest. Come back when you have the Jade Golem Style. Jade Golem Style will crush The Ravager (and anything else for that matter.)
- Freeze him with Ice Shard. Dash forward. Hit him with your most powerful Weapon Style until the ice breaks. Jump backward. Freeze him again. Repeat as needed.
- Fight The Serpent when he muscles into the arena. You have the choice to fight him as yourself or The Black Whirlwind. The Serpent uses Ice Shard, Viper and single-sword Styles. Fight him like you did The Ravager and he will be little trouble. He will summon a pair of Horse Demons halfway through the fight. Kill them, then continue beating The Serpent.
- Congratulations, you've become the arena champion!
- Quest complete.
Aishi the Mournful Blade Sidequest

- Go up the path to reach the school.

- Go to the northeast corner of the school. You will find Aishi at a shrine. Ask to hear her tale for OP points. You can also threaten her for CF points. You will be taken to Captain Sen.
- Let Aishi kill Captain Sen for OP points. You can also side with Captain Sen and kill Aishi for Silver and CF points. Aishi will demand you end her life.
- Fight both Aishi and Captain Sen carefully. They both use very powerful Weapon Styles. Hit them with Magical Styles from a distance. Dodge as needed to keep them at length. Use Transformation Styles if need be.
- Speak to the old man when Aishi is dead.
- Quest complete.
The Black Leopard School Sidequest
- Return to the Black Leopard School.
- Speak to First Brother. He will offer to admit you to the school. Say yes. He will tell you that you must defeat the top six brothers to gain admittance.
- Look for Sixth Brother at the north end of the school. Challenge him. He is not especially tough. Weapon Styles will take him down quickly.
- Find Fifth Brother in his room. Go in the building. Look along the row of doors to your left. His door is the second. Challenge Fifth Brother. He fights similarly to Sixth Brother. Use Weapon or Magical Styles on him.
- Go back into the school. Find Fourth Brother's room. It is just past Fifth Brother's room. Challenge Fourth brother. Use the same strategy on him as you did the last two Brothers.
- You will be contacted by Third Brother after the fight. He will take you to see Master Smiling Hawk. Smiling Hawk will ask you to rid the school of it's other master, Master Radiant. Accept his offer for CF points. You can also refuse him for OP points.
- Challenge Third Brother. He is in the cafeteria. Use the same strategy as you did for the other Brothers.
- Challenge First Brother to fight after you defeat Third Brother. He is in the courtyard. You will only be able to do this if you took the CF path. First Brother will take you to see Master Radiant if you chose the OP path.
- Fight the Masters. Each Master has a Brother and a Novice who will fight you as well. Kill them quickly with a Weapon Style. Use Weapon, Magical or Transformation Styles on the Masters. They are very powerful and have strong attacks. Keep them at a distance if you can. Use a powerful Transformation Style to hit them hard. Avoid their power attacks at all costs.
- Speak to the Master you sided with for a new Style and a Gem. You will gain considerable CF or OP points as well.
- Speak to First or Third Brother (depending on who you sided with) for an additional reward.
- Quest complete.

- Loot the gravedigger's house.
- Kill the Ghost in the gravedigger's back yard.

The Scientist Sidequest
- Find the Tomb of the Forgotten Scholar.
- Enter the tomb. Speak to the old man, Mad Wen Zhi. He will explain his daughter's liver problem.
- Make a choice. There are two ways to save the girl. One is to convince Wen Zhi to give her his liver. The other is to take a Preserved Liver from Ji Xin.
- Taking the Preserved Liver from Ji Xin is much faster and provides more XP.
- Find the Tomb of Ji Xin. It should be southwest from the Tomb of the Forgotten Scholar.
- Enter the tomb. You can either fight Ji Xin for his liver or use Conversation Skills to talk him into giving it willingly. Talking him down gives you OP points. Fighting him gives you CF points.
- Return the Preserved Liver to Wen Zhi.
- Alternative: Convince Wen Zhi to give the girl his own liver.
- Leave the Necropolis. Head to the Arena. Find Doctor An on the upper level. Bring her to the Necropolis to perform the surgery.

- Speak to Ren. He will inform you that he was poisoned by his wife.
- Leave the Necropolis. Return to the Markets.
- Report Fading Moon's death to Captain Sen.

- You can kill Ren Feng in the street for CF points. You can also take her to Ren Ming and reunite them for OP points.
- Speak to the gravedigger for a reward.
- Quest complete.

A Mournful Ghost Sidequest
- Find Miss Chan. She is northeast of the Tomb of Masses.
- Inspect the Chan family graves near her.
- Speak to Miss Chan. Fight and kill her if you follow the Closed Fist. Offer to find her lost son if you follow the Open Palm.
- Tell Miss Chan you can prove her son is dead. Point to the grave of Chan Tuo.
- Speak to the gravedigger for your reward.
- Quest complete.
A Fearful Ghost Sidequest
- Find Merchant Bai just south of Miss Chan.
- Speak to him to learn his predicament. You can also kill him outright.
- Find the Tomb of the Masses. Enter the tomb. Kill the two Ghosts inside.
- Return to Merchant Bai and speak to him.
- Speak to the gravedigger for your reward.
- Quest complete.
- NOTE: The gravedigger will probably present you with The Tanners Fong Sidequest now. Do the Jinlin Sidequest first if he does not offer The Tanners Fong to you.
The Tanners Fong Sidequest
- Speak to the gravedigger. He will tell you that one of his 'clients' has up and left.
- Return to the Markets.
- Head west, across the bridge. Look for Young Tanner Fong standing outside a small room set into the wall. He will inform you of his father, Elder Tanner Fong.
- Speak to Elder Tanner Fong. Kill him for CF points or convince him to speak to his son for OP points.
- Get the Fongs to make up for more OP points.
- Return to the gravedigger for a reward.
- Quest complete.
Jinlin Sidequests
- Return to the Markets.
- Look for the Blacksmith shop. You should meet Purveyor Shouji and Jinlin on your way. Speak to Jinlin. Offer to help her.
- Go to the Necropolis.
- Find the Tomb of the Dignified Collector. It is in the far northwest end. Jinlin will be waiting for you outside.
- Enter the tomb. Fight your way to the back. You will face Ghosts and Zombies. Fight the Ghosts however you like. Hit the Zombies with anything powerful. They have no immunities.
- Fight the Emperor and his Ghosts at the far end of the tomb. The Emperor is a Red Minister Ghost. He can leech Health and Chi from you. Use your most powerful Martial or Magical Styles to destroy him first.
- Loot the tomb.
- Fight your way back out of the tomb. You will face more Ghosts and Zombies.
- Jinlin will leave you once you reach the entrance to the tomb.
- Quest complete.
The Lotus Assassin Fortress
- Head to the far northeast end of the Necropolis. You will find a large building.
- TIP: Read the scroll outside.
- NOTE: This is the last chance to secure a romance later on. Bring your romance along and speak to them now.
- Go inside. Insert your Lotus Assassin Seal into the pedestal to open the door.
- Descend into the Lotus Assassin Fortress.
- Speak to The Watcher.
- Descend the stairs into the main hall.
- Fight the student looking for a fight. The other cronies will run off. You will fight them later.
- Explore the main hall.
- TIP: Speak to Merchant Kia Jong. Mention you know Kia Min. Say the line about her having hair tied in little knots. He will give you a discount on his wares.
- Go to the far end of the hall. Speak to Master Gang.
- Save.
- Follow Master Gang down the stairs.
- Speak to Master Gang again when you reach the bottom. He will assign you the task of destroying the Ghosts outside the Soul Extractor room.
- Look for the door labeled Soul Extractor. Go through. You will be attacked by several Ghosts. Kill them.
- Return to Master Gang. He will assign you to create a Soul Shard and to kill Master Shin.
Planning a Murder
- Find Acolyte Trainer Guang. She will be near Master Gang. Fight her. She uses Martial and Weapon Styles. Use Magic or Weapon Styles to bring her down. Speak to her again. She offers Techniques, Styles and Gems.
- Go to the Soul Extractor Room.
- Make a choice. You can either get a docile spirit for the CF route or a capricious one for the OP route.
- Take the elevator to the Slave Level for the docile spirit. You can also take the elevator all the way down to the deep-level mine for a capricious spirit.
- Kill the slave or kill Zeng Sai. Loot Zeng Sai's coffin for the Soul Shard.
- Fight the Lotus Assassin at the elevator.
- Ride the elevator back up to the prison level. You can fight the guard to release the prisoners. You can also kill the slave here.
- Ride the elevator back up. Leave the Soul Extractor Room.
- You will be confronted by the Acolytes from earlier. Defeat them.
- Look for the door to the Inner Chamber. There will be four of Master Shin's Acolytes out front. Challenge them and kill them all. They get harder as you progress but are not that hard. Use your best Weapon Style to make quick work of them.
- Go to the Golem Press Room.
- Speak to the operator on the platform. Ask him about accidents.
- Use the Golem Press to make a Clay Golem. Use the crane to bring it over the gantry. Leave it for now.
- Return to Master Gang. Tell him to dump Shin's body in the Golem Press. He will instruct you to clear the upper hall, stop the shipment of slaves coming in and kill Master Shin.
- Go to the main hall. Look for the two Mold Masters. Ask them what would damage the Golem Press. They will explain the dangers of Phoenix Oil.
- Go across the hall. Find Merchant Kia. Buy some Phoenix Oil.
- Return to the Golem Press Room.
- Speak to the operator. Use Conversation Skills on him to get him to leave.
- Insert the Phoenix Oil in the Golem Press Controls. This will disable the press and pull the Mold Masters out of the main hall. This also activates three Golems which you will need to defeat. They are the same as the Golems you fought in the Arena.
- Return to the main hall. Ask Merchant Kia to leave.
- Find the Acolyte in the southeast corner. He will ignite his friends. Defeat them and the Acolyte will run.
- Head out into the Necropolis.
Stopping the Slave Shipment
- You will find the slaves and slave masters in the clearing outside the fortress.
- Speak to the Slave Masters. Tell them the shipment must be stopped. You will need to fight them. There are only three Lotus Assassins to fight. Use Weapon or Transformation Styles to defeat them.
- Release the slaves for OP points. You can also kill them for CF points.
- Return to the Lotus Assassin Fortress.
Change of Leadership
- Return to the main hall.
- Head to the stairs leading down to the lower chamber. Master Shin will appear.
- Kill Master Shin. He uses the Viper and Tempest Styles. Treat him like the Ravager.
- TIP: Like the Ravager, Shin can be easily defeated with Ice Shard and a Weapon Style. Freeze him with a power attack. Dash up. Hit him with the Weapon. Retreat. Freeze him again, repeat.
- NOTE: Shin will activate two Golems halfway through the fight. Kill Shin first before you start on the Golems.
- You will be transported to the Golem Press Room. Master Gang is clearly distraught by Master Shin's careless death in the press.
- NOTE: You can now use your Clay Golem to kill Master Gang if you wish. Wait until he gets near where the Golem will hit, then drop it on him.
- Leave the Golem Press Room.
- Head to the Inner Chamber door. You will be approached by an Assassin who tells you that Grand Inquisitor Jia is pleased with your progress.
- Save.
- Enter the Inner Chambers.
- Put your Spirit Shard into the Jade Golem. If you killed Zeng Sai, the Golem will go berserk. You will have to fight four Lotus Assassins and two Jade Golems. Kill the Lotus Assassins first. Use Weapon Styles and hit-and-run strikes on the Jade Golems to whittle them down. It is imperative that you stay behind the Jade Golems at all times. They have a very powerful weapon strike in their front arc. Avoid it at all costs.
- Loot the room.
- Save.
- Continue into the next room. You will need to fight Grand Inquisitor Jia.
- Use the Jade Golem Style on Jia. Regular attacks and power attacks will finish her quickly.
- NOTE: Use any Style Points you have to reduce the Chi Cost of the Jade Golem Style. This will help.
- Fight Jia as you did The Ravager. Use hit-and-run strikes to keep her off-balance. Never fight her face to face.
- TIP: Use the Toad Demon Style if you find yourself being poisoned repeatedly.
- Watch the cinematic.
- Run for the exit! You will be confronted by several groups of Clay Golems and Lotus Assassins. Fight them with your strongest Weapon Style to make short work of them.
- Fight your way out of the Necropolis to The Golden Way. You will be transported to a meeting with your followers.
Entering the Palace
- Speak to your followers.
- NOTE: Chai Ka and Ya Zhen will start a fight if you have spoken to them enough. You will need to choose one to side with. You will be transformed into your chosen Demon. You will fight the other. The Demons are evenly matched. Chai Ka is the Open Palm choice. Ya Zhen is the Closed Fist choice. Treat the Demon like a Transformation Style.
- Choose a follower.
- Go through the large doors. You will be met with several Soldiers and some Lotus Assassins. Use Weapon or Transformation Styles to eliminate them. Space is limited at the base of the stairs. Make sure you keep moving to avoid being surrounded.
- NOTE: There will be another fight with more Soldiers and Assassins at the top of the stairs.
- Read the scrolls and grab the loot.
- Go up the stairs and onto the elevator.
- Follow the hallway. It will be lightly defended with Soldiers. Use Martial or Weapon Styles to defeat them.
- Speak to Silk Fox at the end of the hallway. She will give you the Friends in High Places Technique.
- Continue into the throne room.
- Watch the cinematic.
- Kill the guards. There will be a bunch of them. They will come in waves. Use Martial Styles to defeat them. Avoid Transformation Styles. You will need your Chi. Use Weapon Styles if you start to get overwhelmed. Use AoE attacks liberally.
- TIP: Keep Spirit Thief handy. You will need it.
- Continue up the ramp. You will be met by Elite Assassins. Defeat them with Transformation or Weapon Styles.
- Use the Spirit Font and Focus Shrine. Remember to loot the room.
- Save.
- Continue up the ramp to Sun Hai. He is a ghost and has all the same immunities. Use Martial, Magical or Transformation Styles to take him down.
- TIP: Use Jade Golem to stomp Sun Hai into the ground. This works faster than anything else.
- Speak to Master Li.
The Spirit World
- You will wake up in a strange land. Speak to the Water Dragon to learn your fate.
- NOTE: There is a weapon for you if you have the Special Edition of the game. Turn around. Head south until you see a trio of cannons. Look around them for the Demon Sword.
- Head towards the pillar of light. You will be attacked periodically by Lost Souls and Ghost Lords (only in the Special Edition.)
- TIP: Use Spirit Thief if you run low on Chi. There is no way to replenish yourself here.
- NOTE: You will not be able to take a follower here. Be careful.
- Go up the stairs toward the pillar of light.
- Speak to the Water Dragon. You will be taken to Dirge.
The Spirit World of Dirge
- Head up the stairs.
- Kill the Rat and Horse Demons. You can use all your normal Styles here. Use whatever Styles you like.
- Go across the bridge. You will meet Abbot Song.
- Watch the cinematic.
- Accept Abbot Song's aid. He is your only chance at a follower for now.
- TIP: Put Abbot Song in Support Mode and leave him there. He will constantly replenish all of your Stats.
- Take a left at the end of the bridge. Approach the fountain. You will be attacked by three Ghosts, one tougher than the other two. Kill the magic-users first.
- Inspect the fountain to restore it.
- Head up the stairs. Look for the door to the Inner Courtyard.
- Speak to the Water Dragon.
- Head through the doors.
- Follow the path. Use the Spirit Font.
Gem of Power Sidequest
- Approach the next fountain. You will be confronted by a Minion of Suffering. Do not follow it immediately.
- Go to the left and follow the path.
- Take another left just after you pass a gate. You will find a Gem in an urn and a few Ghosts in a courtyard. Take the Gem and kill the Ghosts.
- Head back down. Head west along another path, up the stairs.
- Kill the Ghosts at the top. There will be two Lost Souls and a Red Minister. Use Martial Styles on the Lost Souls and Transformation Styles on the Red Minister. Open the Warded Urn for another Gem.
- Equip the Gem you just received. It will vary depending on your chosen path (OP or CF).
- Quest complete.
Restoring the Fountains
- Go back to the fountain. Use the Spirit Font on the way back.
- Follow the Path of Demons up the hill.
- Head into the cave.
- Fight your way to the end of the cave. Try and save your Chi. Use Spirit Thief if you run low.
- Attack the Minion with Weapon or Martial Styles. The Minion of Suffering has some nasty attacks. He has a shock attack that does high damage. Counter the shock by engaging him quickly. Keep him busy with fast Styles like Thousand Cuts or Weapon Styles.
- TIP: Do not use Transformation Styles on the Minion of Suffering. They are too slow and will fall victim to his shock attack.
- Take the Seal once the Minion is dead. Loot the room.
- Leave the cave.
- Interact with the fountain to plant the seal.
- Go through the gates to the Temple Courtyard.
- Use the Spirit Font and Focus Shrine.
- Head up the large flight of stairs at the far end of the courtyard.
- Save.
- Fight the Abomination. This manifests as three versions of yourself. One uses Ice Shard, one uses Dire Flame and the other uses twin sabers. Kill the Ice Shard Abomination first. It can slow or freeze you and leave you easy prey for the other two. Kill the Twin Saber Abomination second. Keep moving so you dodge the flame attacks. Use Weapon or Martial Styles to defeat the Twin Saber and Dire Flame Abominations. Avoid Transformation Styles. These burn your Chi too fast. The Twin Saber Abomination can add up damage very quickly. Avoid it at all costs. Heal if you drop below 75% Health.
- Watch the cinematic. You will be assaulted by a never-ending stream of Horse Demons. In the center is a glowing red orb. Ignore the Demons and attack the orb. The Horse Demons will disappear and stop spawning once the orb is destroyed.
- Explore the temple. Make sure you meditate at each of the two statues: Mah Tsung and the Heavenly Gate Guardian.
- Loot the Bones and the rest of the room. You should find the first page of the Tome of Release.
- Head to the southwest corner. Go down the small flight of stairs.
- Go through the door into the room. Loot the room. You should find some Machined Cogs. You will need these later.
- Leave the temple. Kill the three Ghosts at the bottom of the stairs.
Preparing for Battle
- Look around the courtyard. You will have to fend off a few Ghosts, but they are easy.
- TIP: Look for some Bones near the northern stairs. This contains the second page of the Tome of Release.
- Look for the third page in the center of the courtyard.
- Go all the way to the other end of the courtyard. You will find some Beveled Cogs and the fourth page of the Tome of Release near the gate.
- Go to the landing platform. Speak to your followers.
- NOTE: Your romantic pursuit will await you outside a tent and ask for your attention. Speak to them.
- Go past the tents to the platform. Loot it to find the last page of the Tome of Release.
- Head back to the temple. Stop in the entryway. You should see five Meditation Wheels on the walls near the doorway. Use the Beveled and Machined Cogs to repair them. Meditate at the wheels to earn the Communion of the Dragon Technique.
- Go to the statue of Mah Tsung. Perform the Ritual of Release to earn the Turning Wheel Technique.
- Return to the campsite. Speak to your romantic interest.
- NOTE: Refuse to choose one or the other if you have been pursuing two romantic interests. Both will reject you if you choose one over the other. Simply use a tent to continue the plot if you did not have a romantic interest.
- Watch the cinematic. You will be forced to fight some of your old schoolmates. Use Weapon Styles to bring them down quickly. They are not very powerful but can be dangerous if you underestimate them.
- Speak to your followers. Suggest destroying the bridge.
- Choose either Dawn Star or Silk Fox. The difference is mainly cosmetic (eg: who would you prefer to control.)
- Accept Kang's mission to destroy some fliers. This reduces the number of enemies The Black Whirlwind will have to fight later. This is a standard flier mission. Use Radiant Aura to keep yourself alive longer.
- Go down the platform to the fountain once you get control of Dawn Star or Silk Fox. This will supply you with a new, upgraded weapon.
- Return to the bridge. Your job is to prevent the Soldiers and Lotus Assassins from killing Kang and preventing the bridge's destruction. Use Weapon attacks and Chi Strikes to eliminate the enemies. Stay in front of Kang at all times. You must defend Kang for two minutes in order to destroy the bridge.
- TIP: Stay away from the casks. They will explode if they are hit.
- TIP: Look at your Journal. There will be several interesting quests there.
- Speak to your companion.
- Head for the Inner Courtyard door. This will transfer the scene to The Black Whirlwind and Henpecked Hou.
- TIP: Read the Journal again to see The Black Whirlwind's quests.
- Go to the west side of the courtyard. Look for an urn. It will upgrade your axes.
- TIP: Run over Henpecked Hou's wine bottles to restore Whirlwind's Health and Chi.
- Kill as many Soldiers as you like. You can kill up to 100.
- Destroy the Jade Golem when you feel ready. Whirlwind's power attacks and Chi Strikes will dispatch it quickly.
- Go up the stairs. You will return to your main character.
- Save.
- Fight Death's Hand. The trick is to keep him at arm's reach. His only Style is his Twin Blades. They are very powerful, but short ranged. Use Magical Styles to keep him away from you. You can also use Transformation Styles. This may be quicker, but is also more dangerous.
- Fight Death's Hand again. This time, you are the spirit of Sun Kin facing the armor. Use quick strikes and dodge continually. This will keep the armor off-balance. Use AoE attacks to stun it if you need time to regroup.
- Make a choice. You can either free Sun Kin's soul for OP points or claim it as your own for CF points. Claiming Death's Hand as your own gives him to you as a follower.
- NOTE: You get nothing if Sun Kin gets killed by his armor. Reload if this happens.
Back to the Palace
- Speak to your companions. Speak to Kang when you're ready to go.
- NOTE: Bring your favorite companion with you. After a point, you cannot change your follower.
- Head through the large doors.
- Save.
- Go up the stairs. You will be met with ten Lotus Assassins. The area you have to fight in is quite small. Use Weapon Styles and Free Target Mode (press A + X) to hit multiple opponents. You can also use Transformation Styles to make things easier.
- Run back down the stairs. Use the Focus Shrine and Spirit Font.
- Head to the elevator.
- Fight the guards in the cave. There aren't many of them. Weapon or Transformation Styles will make short work of them.
- Save.
- Make the choice. Speak to the Water Dragon. You have the option to destroy her body for massive OP points or claim her power for CF points. Claiming the power of the Water Dragon means fighting all of your followers except Death's Hand.
- NOTE: This is the only choice that determines which ending to the game you get.
- Loot the cave.
- Speak to your companions.
- Follow Sun Li up the steps. He will summon four Demons to attack you. Use your best Weapon Style or Jade Golem to destroy them. Dodge as many of their attacks as you can. Use hit-and-run tactics to whittle them down. Again, do not attack them head on. They have very powerful melee attacks. They are slow but very strong.
- Fight your doubts. Sun Li will trap you in your mind. Your allies will assist you. You will need to fight three Ghost aspects of yourself. Use Martial and Magical Styles on them. A good combination is Ice Shard and Thousand Cuts.
- Speak with Sun Li.
- NOTE: There is also a "neutral" ending to the game which forgoes the Open Palm and Closed Fist endings. To get this ending, agree to everything Sun Li asks.
- Fight Sun Li. He has a variety of attacks that can slow you down (Ice Shard, Paralyzing Palm). He is also able to use Focus Mode to hit you faster. Use your best Weapon or Magical Styles to keep him in check. You can also use Jade Golem Style to pound him into the ground. Concentrate on avoidance. His attacks are designed to slow you down and whittle you down slowly. Avoiding them robs Sun Li of his advantage.
- Enjoy the ending. Congratulations, you have completed Jade Empire! Beating the game unlocks the special Jade Master difficulty for those with the Special Edition.
Marvelous Dragonfly Missions
- These begin in the swamp just after you rescue Dawn Star. The only compulsory flyer mission is when you fly back to Two Rivers. This teaches you how to use the Marvelous Dragonfly.
- Marvelous Dragonfly missions grant you XP and upgrades for the Marvelous Dragonfly.
- You may avoid Marvelous Dragonfly missions if you wish by choosing 'Evade' while traveling in between locations.
- There are two Sidequest chains that utilize the Marvelous Dragonfly. Lord Lao's Furnace, and Hin Goo's Missions.
- Lord Lao's Furnace becomes available after you rescue Kang the Mad from Gao the Greater.
- Hin Goo is a man waiting in the hangar in the Imperial City. He has only three missions, each with increasing difficulty. His missions are very straightforward. Simply speak to him and accept a mission.
- NOTE: Radiant Aura is one of the most useful upgrades for the Marvelous Dragonfly. It allows you to absorb additional damage before crashing. The best part: you begin with the Radiant Aura.
Lord Lao's Furnace
- Speak to Kang the Mad any time after you rescue him. Tell him you are interested in helping him follow his wind map. You will need to survive a storm of enemies in the following mission. Use the Radiant Aura and keep moving to avoid getting hit.
- Ask Kang to activate his invention. This will take you to Lord Lao's Furance.
- The furnace operates through several smaller inventions. These are: the Clapper Chimney, Conductor, Cranking Cauldron, Water Wheel and Whirling Cogs.
- There are also two statues. One is of a tiger, the other is of a dragon.
- The various small inventions and the statues are used in conjunction with fuel (Cow Bezoar, Bar of Nickeled Iron, Eyes of the Void, Vial of Sulphurous Water) and Configurations to produce new Techniques and a new Gem. Configurations and fuel are found throughout the game. Each Configuration requires a different combination of inventions, fuel and statues to produce the Technique.
- Each Configuration can only be used once.
- Note: After completing three Configurations, Kang will ask you to undertake another flyer mission. Doing so completes his quest chain.
