  • Career

    Jaco Pastorius started out as a drummer but switched to bass after injuring his wrist while playing football. As he developed as a bass player his interest in jazz grew.

    Pastorius released his self-titled debut album in 1976. Shortly after he joined the jazz fusion group Weather Report. He recorded six albums with the group while maintaining a solo career until 1986.

  • Death

    Pastorius suffered from drug and mental health problems later in his life. On September 11, 1987 he was severely beaten by a club bouncer named Luc Havan. Pastorius never recovered from his injuries. His family decided to take him off life support on September 21, 1987. Havan was charged with man-slaughter and served four months in prison.
