Jackson State University is a public four year university offering both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university is a historically black institution with an average yearly enrollment of approximately 8,416.

Located on a 250 acre campus, Jackson State is located five minutes from downtown. Originally a seminary school, it transitioned into a college in 1899 and fully expanded into a university by 1974.
