  • About Jackie McLean

John Lenwood (Jackie) McLean was a famous alto saxophonist known for his "sweet & sour" tone. He was the son of John Mclean Sr., a guitarist who played in the Tiny Bradshaw Orchestra. Mr. Mclean recorded with Miles Davis at the age of 19, and played in the bands of many famous musicians. Besides Miles Davis, he played in bands led by Charles Mingus and Art Blakey. In 1968, McLean began a long career as a jazz music educator, a career that extended until his death in 2006. He taught music and African-American studies at The Hartt School of Music, part of the University of Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut. Even as he took on the role of college professor, he continued to tour and record. Jackie McLean's recording and performing career spanned more than 50 years, from 1951 to 2004.
