Quotes
"It was over. I was the Open champion as well as the Amateur champion. At last I had proved that, playing golf full-time, I could do what I had done when playing only part-time. In my seventeenth tournament as a professional, I had won." - Jack Nicklaus on winning the 1962 US Openhttp://www.nicklaus.com/nicklaus_facts/1962.php
"I was playing good golf, but it really wasn't that big a deal to me one way or the other. And then my father passed away and I sort of realized that he had certainly lived his life through my golf game. I really hadn't probably given him the best of that. So I sort of got myself back to work. So '70 was an emotional one for me from that standpoint. ... It was a big boost." - Jack Nicklaushttp://www.nicklaus.com/design/oldcorkscrew/news_062606a.php
"I had never shown emotion like that before, and it was totally out of character. But then I had never before won the oldest golf championship in the world at the cradle and home of the game." - Jack Nicklaus on the 1970 British Openhttp://www.nicklaus.com/nicklaus_facts/1970.php
"I had tried to downplay it as much as possible, but, now that it had happened, it was wonderfully satisfying. I had long ago recognized that setting records must one day become my primary goal and motivation if I hoped to go on being truly competitive. This was a record to savor and be proud of." - Jack Nicklaus on winning the grand slam twicehttp://www.nicklaus.com/nicklaus_facts/1971.php
"That's all any man can do, and it is what I have been trying to do all through my career. If when my playing days are finally over I am judged to have succeeded, that will do just fine for an epitaph." - Jack Nicklaus (1973)http://www.nicklaus.com/nicklaus_facts/1973.php
"There are those in golf who would argue into next month that the final two rounds of the 1977 British Open were the greatest head-to-head golf match ever played. Not having been around for the fir't five hundred or so years of the game, I'm not qualified to speak on such matters. What's for sure, however, is that it was the most thrilling one-on-one battle of my career." - Jack Nicklaus on the 1977 British Openhttp://www.nicklaus.com/nicklaus_facts/1977.php
"...European professional golf had been rising steadily for some years. Until that 1983 encounter, though, I don't think anyone over here fully appreciated how good our friends across the pond had become. For me, and I'm sure for a lot of others, that event marked the burial of any notion that Europe's best golfers were less than world-class." - Jack Nicklaus on the 1983 European Ryder Cup teamhttp://www.nicklaus.com/nicklaus_facts/1983.php
"Getting down in two from forty feet on Augusta National's huge and difficult eighteenth green was far from the position I wanted to be in, but it was what I had to deal with to possibly win a sixth Masters. As I went about doing so, I kept telling myself, 'Don't leave yourself a second putt, don't leave yourself a second putt.' And, just fortunately, I did not, closing out a back nine of 30 and a round of 65 with a tap-in of about four inches, a distance I've generally been able to handle. The affection Jackie and I then showed each other seems to have become one of the sport's most indelible moments, and it will surely remain one of my most cherished memories through all of my remaining days. Jackie simply could not have been more helpful or supportive in the way he handled the mechanics of an always stressful and grueling task, nor in the timeliness and insight and sincerity of his encouragement. It was just a wonderful experience to have one of the people I care most deeply about share by far the most fulfilling achievement of my career. And what made it even more wonderful was that Jackie also enjoyed it so much. 'I was so proud of him,' he would tell the press later that evening. Finally, when he putted out on eighteen, I told him, 'Dad, I loved seeing you play today.' It was the thrill of my life. I mean, that was just awesome." - Jack Nicklaus on the 1986 Mastershttp://www.nicklaus.com/nicklaus_facts/1986.php
"There's no point getting him riled up because every time someone's challenged him in his career, he's come back. Jack is working real hard on his game. He's not going to come out here until he's ready." - Lee Trevino (1990)http://www.nicklaus.com/nicklaus_facts/1992.php
"Jack is so intense, so in a trance, you could have the Long Beach State marching band there and he wouldn't have any idea." - Phil Rodgers after he was paired with Nicklaus in the final round of the 1990 Traditionhttp://www.nicklaus.com/nicklaus_facts/1992.php
"If Tiger is going to pass my record, I think this is a big year for him in that regard. If he doesn't play this year, obviously the chore is going to be a little tougher." - Jack Nicklaus, on Tiger Woodshttp://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=4809137
"I have a signed Masters flag in my office with his signature on it . . . Obviously, you know what he's meant for the game of golf.
