On May 5, 2009, gossip blogs reported that McCollough had been involved in an altercation with actor Kiefer Sutherland at an after-party following New York's Met Ball on May 4. The altercation, which was said to have been about actress Brooke Shields, allegedly led to Sutherland headbutting McCollough and breaking his nose.
