Jack Markell

Democrat Jack Markell is the governor of Delaware. He beat out Republican William Lee in the 2008 elections after receiving 68 percent of the vote.CNN: Election Results (November 4, 2008) Since 1998, Markell had served as Delaware's state treasurer. Before his career in politics, he was an executive at Comcast and spent time with a small company that later became Nextel.

Markell was elected state treasurer in 1998 and won re-election two times by large majorities.CNN: Candidate Bios (November 4, 2008) As state treasurer, Markell cut state spending by reducing bulk purchasing and cut health care costs by giving state employees health assessments. He also set up a school that offered free classes on money issues, such as saving for retirement or college.
