Life and Career
Jack LaLanne was born to French immigrants in San Francisco, California. As a young child he was addicted to sugar and junk food and grew up with a mean, angry disposition which he attributed to his diet. When he reached the age of fifteen he was impressed by a nutrition and health speech given by Paul Bragg and decided to devote himself to living a healthy lifestyle and working out. He started exploring weight lifting at his local YMCA and was inspired by his rapid results.http://fitness.suite101.com/article.cfm/jack_la_lanne_biography
In 1936, upon completing his degree from Oakland Chiropractic College, he decided to open his own health spa instead of practicing Chiropractics like he originally intended. The first health spa quickly grew into over 200 health clubs across the United States during the 1980s. The name of these health clubs ultimately became Bally Total Fitness. LaLanne is no longer involved with the running or management of any of the Bally's gyms, but he continues to work out and lift weights.http://timelines.com/topics/bally-total-fitness
