J.J. Putz is an All-Star closing pitcher for the New York Mets.
On December 11, 2008, the New York Mets acquired closer J.J. Putz from the Seattle Mariners in a three-team deal. Putz is expected to become the Mets' set-up man and spot closer for the newly acquired Francisco Rodriguez. The Mets committed 29 blown saves in 2008 and their bullpen had a 4.25 earned run average. Early Life
Joseph Jason Putz was born in Trenton, Michigan on February 22, 1977. He attended high school at Trenton High School in Michigan, where he led the baseball team to two state championships in 1994. He continued his education at the University of Michigan.
Pro Career
Putz was drafted in the sixth round of the 1999 Major League Baseball draft. He made his major league debut with the Seattle Mariners on August 11, 2003. Putz developed into the team's closer by 2006 and was voted into the American League All-Star game the following season. He finished the 2007 season with a career-high 40 saves.
