Effect on Policy
David Cameron, Ivan's father, is currently the Opposition Leader in the U.K. He describes himself as a "late bloomer" when it comes to support for Britain's National Health system. His experience with Ivan's disability, he says, have deeply affected his beliefs. He also credits Ivan with helping to form his strong conviction about the importance of government support for families. He sponsored legislation promoting extended parental leaves in Britain, explaining "We’re not going to solve the problems of obesity, drugs, alcohol or educational underperformance unless we help families to do their great work."Guardian: How Ivan Cameron Influenced His Father's Politics (February 25, 2009) The Sun: This is Ivan (March 14, 2008)
Ohtahara Syndrome
Ohtahara syndrome is a congenital neurological disorder that combines both cerebral palsy and epilepsy. It produces frequent seizures, and appears shortly after birth. It is not known whether Ivan's condition was inherited, or whether it was due to trauma at birth. If inherited, there would be a one in four chance that other children his parents had would also have the condition. Both of his siblings are healthy.BBC Audio: Cameron Discusses Son's Disability (February 25, 2009) (Time: 3:09)
