Italo Calvino was an Italian writer and journalist who has written such popular pieces as If On a Winter's Night a Traveler, Invisible Cities and the Cosmicomics series. Calvino was born in Cuba but his family moved to Italy when he was only two years old.
Political Beliefs
Italo Calvino embraced the post-World War II communist movement of Europe in the early years of his writing career. After he graduated from college, he joined the Italian Communist Party and was active with Turin's worker movement. He also took a job as a journalist for l'Unità, a daily communist newspaper. He eventually lost faith in the communist movement and in 1956, the invasion of Hungary caused him to resign from both l'Unità and the Italian Communist Party.
