Anglesey - Avalon - and Island Druids
Historically this Island was a training centre and school for Druids. These were the Druids of the island, or the island Druids of Anglesey. Anglesey, in Gaelic “Ynys Mon”, is a name that was derived from the Roman name for the Island, “Mona” after they slaughtered the Druid teachers and students of the island. History shows that the Roman government both feared and hated the Druids. With its powerful armies the Romans had fear of the Druids who were the intelligentsia of the Celtic nations uniting the tribes to rise up against them. The power of the Druid was wisdom and knowledge and so it was that their centre of knowledge became the ultimate target of Rome.
The original name of the island is lost to history though some have proposed that it was called Avalon. Avalon is the Island known from the Holy Grail mythology and stories. Avalon is derived from the ancient Welsh word “Afallach”, which translates to “rich in apples”, which Avalon/Anglesey was and is known for.
The Grail mythologies also include an interesting wizard that has often been referred to as a druid.
