The Group and the Attack
The group is a recently formed terrorist cell that takes its name from similar terrorist groups in the Palestinian territories and in Afghanistan and Iran. On August 28, 2008, the group's leader was captured after a gun battle with Yemeni police. In the attack on the U.S. embassy on September 17, 2008, 16 individuals were killed, including six of the attackers. Shortly afterward, Islamic Jihad in Yemen threatened to attack the British embassy as well.
