Isis

Isis was the ancient Egyptian goddess of motherhood and the queen of the gods. She was also associated with life, children, peace, magic, love and medicine.http://www.nemo.nu/ibisportal/0egyptintro/1egypt/index.htm She was often depicted holding her son Horus on her lap and nursing him. She often had a sun disc over her head, flanked by horns.http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/egypt/isis.htm She was the daughter of Nut, the sky goddess, and Geb, the earth god.http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/egypt/nutgeb.htm

Her siblings were Osiris, Set, Nephthys, and Horus (who was born to Isis and Osiris in later myths). She married Osiris and she is the goddess that reassembles and embalms Osiris after his brother Set has ripped him to pieces and cast his remains about Egypt.http://faculty.mdc.edu/jmcnair/Joe12pages/The%20Osiris%20Legend1.htm

Isis Mythology

Isis plays a key role in the myth of Osiris' death. In it, Set has trapped Osiris in a sarcophagus and thrown it into the Nile River, and Isis searches for his body so that she can give it a proper burial.http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/egypt/seth.htm She asks everyone she can if they know where Osiris' body is, and finally a group of children tell her.http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/egypt/seth.htm She takes Osiris from the Nile and then leaves him while she tends to her child, Horus. When Set learns that she has Osiris' body, he worries that she will use her magical powers to raise him from the dead so he dismembers Osiris' body and strews him around Egypt.http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/egypt/seth.htm Isis searches and finds the pieces of Osiris and reassembles them (in some stories she does raise him from the dead and they conceive Horus at this point in the myth).http://faculty.mdc.edu/jmcnair/Joe12pages/The%20Osiris%20Legend1.htm Osiris becomes the king of the dead and Isis' son Horus goes on to try and avenge his father's death.http://faculty.mdc.edu/jmcnair/Joe12pages/The%20Osiris%20Legend1.htm

In another myth, Isis tricks Set and he is punished for killing Osiris. Isis comes to Set asking for help, and asks him what should be done to a man who kills a man and takes everything away from his son. Set says the man should be punished, and Isis tells Set that he is that man and he should be punished. The other gods agree and Set is cast into the Sahara Desert.http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/egypt/isis.htm
