Irish Water Spaniel

The Irish water spaniel is the largest dog in the spaniel group. The breed originated in Ireland and is thought to be a cross between the poodle and the Portuguese water dog.

Health Problems

Irish water spaniels may suffer from hip or thyroid problems. Although they shed very little, they do require regular grooming to remove matted fur. Because of their low shedding characteristic, they are recommended for people with dog allergies.

Sports or Activities

As their name suggests, Irish water spaniels enjoy swimming and have webbed feet to help them swim. They can be used in hunting or competitively shown. They require a moderate amount of exercise, such as a daily walk.
