Initially pundits were calling for the release of an "iPhone 2" in 2008. However, it was during 2008 that the iPhone 3G was released. While the new iPhone was a major move forward in the advancement of the product, the official Apple coded name for the hardware was "iPhone 1,2." In January 2009 a new hardware name was discovered in a firmware upgrade released by Apple.
