Iowa City Evacuations

    • Iowa River expected to recede Monday, June 16, 2008 evening
    • Iowa City, Iowa is home to approximately 60,000 residents
    • The river reached 31.5 feet
    • 16 buildings have been flooded
    • In Cedar Rapids, about 24,000 were forced to evacuate
    • Iowa City's municipal water system was back to 50 percent of capacity
    • The city's drinking water has been polluted, leaving about 15 million gallons of water a day for the city
  • The Iowa River in Iowa City, Iowa rose to 31.5 feet causing hundreds of residents to be evacuated. On Sunday, June 15, 2008, residents were allowed to return to their homes temporarily to retrieve personal items. Authorities believe that it will be some time before residents can return to their homes for good.
