The iPhone OS 4.0 operating system was renamed the iOS 4 during Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC 2010). The iPad is expected to receive the iOS 4 later this summer and presumably other devices such as the rumored Apple TV upgrade. iOS4 is now Gold Master Candidate placed in developer's hands on June 7th - over a hundred enhancements - here are the key ones:

• Retina Display on the iPhone 4 has 78% of pixels of an iPad run full size by iOS 4 but with better rendering.
• iOS 4 with the new A4 chip increases talk time by 40% (to 7 hours on 3G)
• iOS 4 supports Quadband HSDPA/HSUPA with 7.2 mbit down, 5.8 mbit up (if carriers support)
• iOS 4 supports six axis motion sensing with the addition of a gyroscope on the iPhone 4
• iOS 4 allows HD videos to be recorded - 720p at 30fps
• iOS 4 includes video editing capability right on your iPhone 4
• iOS 4 includes folders, mail (unified inbox and threading), enhanced camera and photo apps, deeper enterprise support.
• iMovie for iPhone added to the iOS 4
• Bing Search added - still have Google Search and Yahoo!
• iBooks to the iPhone 4 now available with iOS 4 supporting * "Download the same book to all your devices for no extra charge" and "iBooks automatically syncs your place, bookmarks, and notes"
• FaceTime supported by iOS 4 allowing video calling - iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 anywhere there is WiFi

Apple's iPhone OS 4.0 (iOS 4) allows third party applications to run in the background while the user opens another application. Examples of when this might be useful are when you want to:

• listen to Internet radio on your iPhone with an app like Pandora

• make instant messaging apps like IRC, ICQ, AIM, Trillian or YM always be available

Many iPhone users jailbreak their phones right now, so that they can run these types of applications in the background.
