Summary
The series begins at the great Irken Assigning, where Invaders are given planets to conquer. Zim is a diminutive Irken soldier, dispatched to a "mystery planet" during Operation Impending Doom II, due to his poor performance in Operation Impending Doom I, in which he nearly destroyed his own planet. He is issued an insane robot assistant named GIR, and together they take up life on Earth disguised as a small, green child and his insane dog-like creature.
Zim's nemesis, Dib, is a paranormal hunter, and the only one to recognize that Zim is an alien. Since Dib has also seen Bigfoot (in his garage, using his belt sander), everyone thinks Dib is crazy, so no one believes him. Dib makes it his mission to stop Zim, but Zim's incompetence makes this a relatively easy task. On several occasions, when other alien forces threaten earth, Zim and Dib form an uneasy alliance to save the world (since Zim does not want to let anyone else destroy the earth, he wants to destroy it himself).
