Sean Penn's 2007 film Into the Wild is based on the non-fiction book of the same name, by Jon Krakauer. It follows the life of Christopher McCandless, who abandons his middle class life to journey into the Alaskan wilderness, and the people he encounters along the way.
Production
Most of the Alaskan scenes are shot on the actual site where McCandless lived, in the abandoned bus he referred to as the "Magic Bus." The production made four separate trips to the site of McCandless' "camp," and even found the man who had dropped McCandless off and given him boots - Jim Gallien - to play himself in the movie.
Hirsch didn't use any stunt doubles while making the film.
Reception
The National Board of Review named Into the Wild one of the Top 10 films of 2007. The film was nominated for two Oscars: Best Supporting Actor for Hal Holbrook and Best Film Editing.
