The Interstellar Boundary Explorer, a probe designed to explore the edge of the solar system, was launched successfully by NASA on October 19, 2008.NASA: Ibex is in orbit! (October 19. 2008) IBEX will remain in high earth orbit for two years, measuring solar wind. The solar wind from the sun creates pressure that flows out from the sun to the edge of the solar system. This pressure, called the heliosphere, prevents dangerous radiation from entering the solar system and the earth's atmosphere. IBEX will study the edge of the solar system, where the solar wind meets deep space, and try to map the heliosphere.CNN: Spacecraft to probe edge of solar system (October 20, 2008)
