Internet Addiction

-->
  • Internet Addiction, or Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD), is a theorized disorder originally made up by Ivan Goldberg, M.D., as a satirical hoax. In 1995, he took the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) diagnostic criteria for gambling addiction and used that as his model for the spoofed description of internet addiction. The AMA declined to recommend that IAD be included as a formal diagnosis in the 2012 edition of the DSM. The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)also opposed IAD, saying internet overuse and video games are not true addictions.

    Recent studies in Canada, the United Kingdom, and China lend new credence to the argument that Internet Addiction Disorder is, in fact, a real malady. A study conducted by the Quebec Health Network has shown that hundreds of patients have sought professional help for Internet addiction over the past few years, while the results of a YouGov study in the United Kingdom have led to the use of the term "epidemic". The Chinese are affected as well, with a new study estimating that 40 million people under the age of 18 are addicted to the Internet in China.Toronto CityNews: Is Someone in Your Family An Internet Addict?PC Pro: U.K. Internet Addiction WorseningChina Journal: Youth and Internet in China

Activities which would normally be considered troublesome if done in person, such as compulsive gambling or shopping, are called net compulsions. Others, such as website surfing or playing computer games, are troubling only to the extent that these activities interfere with normal life. Other symptoms that typically go along with Internet addiction include lack of sleep, fatigue, declining grades or poor job performance, apathy, and racing thoughts.
  • Treatment of Internet Addiction

    Many spoof websites exist with the humor based on the idea that to help one quit their internet use, they must use the internet. Despite the joke, there are actually many resources online that exist to help those who feel they have issues with internet addiction, such as Internet-a-holics Anonymous. Some rehab clinics that specialize in gambling addiction, sex addition, and other non-substance, or “process addictions,” have also developed treatment programs for internet addiction. Reports say that soon China will have rehab camps specifically for addiction to online gaming.
