A wide-ranging ethics scandal involving the U.S. Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service was announced by the U.S. Inspector General in a report released on September 10, 2008. According to allegations in the report, employees at the Royalty-in-Kind Office received trips and dinners from oil industry executives in return for preferential treatment concerning oil and gas royalties.
