Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman became the Forties' most bankable female screen star after appearing in one of the most acclaimed films in history in Casablanca. She followed that classic up with two straight films for which she was nominated for an Academy Award (she won for 1944's Gaslight), and before the decade was out she had two more nominations. She won three Oscars in total over the course of her career, and also won two Emmy Awards and the first-ever Best Actress Tony Award in 1947.
