  • Brief Background

The son of a conservative Lutheran pastor, Bergman grew up in and around churches, the influence of which the director would later say informed his work. Bergman began writing screenplays as early as 1941, and began directing films in the late 1940s and 1950s. His film Smiles of a Summer Night was nominated for the Golden Palm at Cannes in 1955, and his films from the late 1950sThe Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries—established him as an intellectual writer and director of great depth and vision. He would win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film three times, for The Virgin Spring in 1961, Through a Glass Darkly in 1962, and Fanny and Alexander in 1984. A 1976 arrest for tax evasion briefly caused him to leave his native Sweden. Bergman also maintained an active role in the theatre throughout his life.
