Infinity Blade Story

Infinity Blade's story begins with the player taking the role of an unnamed warrior, set out to defeat the God King. When arrived at the God King's throne, the player learns from him that it's been centuries since anyone has challenged him and his minions. The God King also reveals that like several before, the warrior's quest is doomed to fail. Sure enough, the God King will defeat the player with ease, simply because the players are far too weak to go against him. After the initial defeat, the story will fast forward twenty-some years ahead, where the storyline truly begins, with son of the previously seen warrior, out to avenge his father. The way storyline works in Infinity Blade is through "Bloodlines", these bloodlines are set out in a way so the descendants of the previous warrior will inherit all of the equipments and stats that was available.

Much of the game's story will be set in a "loop", with players gaining better equipments and stats after each Bloodline, until they are strong enough to defeat the God King. Chair Entertainment has promised its players with updated contents in the future through downloadable contents from the iTunes App Store, where the game will be updated regularly with new quests and gameplay modes. These updates will include elements such as Arena, multiplayer, and additional storylines.

Infinity Blade Gameplay

Infinity Blade's gameplay element is what makes the game stand out from many other games available on the App Store. The iDevice's touchscreen is where all the action will happen, and players will use it for all the controls. The majority of the gameplay in the game will happen in combat, where players will need to attack, defend, parry, and cast in order to take out the minions of God King. The battles are unique in that they require precise timing and execution, since a correctly performed attack can make the difference between coming out of a battle dead or alive. Outside of battle, the game is set pre-determined areas, where the players' only interaction is to choose where to go next, and  find hidden items in the cinematics.

Infinity Blade Combat

At the start of the game, you are introduced to various elements of combat, these elements include attacking, blocking, parrying, and dodging. Mastering these techniques will be vitally important to succeeding in the game in order to defeat the God King. Here, we will have an in-depth look at these combat aspects.

Defensive - Blocking

  • This is the most basic form of defense in Infinity Blade, press and hold on the shield icon at the bottom of the screen to have the character block with his shield.
  • When the player is hit by the enemy while blocking, they will not take any damage, but the number on the shield icon will decrease. When that number reaches 0, you will not be able to block attacks anymore. Different attacks will take off different amounts of points from this counter, so use the shield wisely.
  • Sometimes when blocking, you will be able to perform a "Block Break", which makes the enemy stunned, and vulnerable to attacks.
  • Almost all attacks can be blocked without much trouble, but there are some combo attacks and big hits from enemies like the God King which will bypass your shield, so be careful.
Defensive - Dodging
  • The second form of defense is dodging, or, moving aways from attacks to completely avoid them. This can be performed by pressing the arrow keys on the bottom of the screen on either side of the shield icon.
  • Dodging wil completely avoid one attack from the enemy, given that you've dodged at the right time and direction. Unlike the shield, dodge button cannot be held, so exact timing is almost always required.
  • To dodge an attack, players need to decide where the enemy's attacks are coming from. For example, when an enemy swipes from left to right, in order to dodge it, you will need to dodge left, to avoid the attack. In short, you want to dodge towards to initiating direction of the attack. For overhead or underhand attacks, dodging either way works.
  • Similar to blocking, dodging will trigger "Dodge Break", leaving the enemy vulnerable to your attacks.
  • Generally, dodging works for most attacks, but there are some attacks that are way too fast or too hard to time, so it is generally advised to alter between blocking and dodging when facing faster enemies.
Defensive - Parry
  • The final form of defense is parrying, and by far the hardest one to perform and master. Parrying is performed when the enemy hits are clashed and negated by your weapon swing.
  • Parrying requires you to swipe your finger along the screen at the opposite direction of where you think the enemy's swings are coming from. For example, if an enemy is swinging from the left for an attack, in order to parry it, you will need to swipe from the right, JUST as the attack is being made mid-swing. Similarly, to counter an overhead strike, one would need to perform an underhand swipe to deflect it.
  • Parries are the most situational defensive maneuver, but the most rewarding. Some attacks such as shield bashes and head-butts cannot be parried at all, and other attacks such as special attacks from higher level enemies are way too fast to predict which direction it's coming from.
  • Just like blocking and dodging, parrying will cause "Parry Break" to the enemy, but this happens much more often compared to the previous two techniques. In addition to Parry Break, parrying also initiates "Sword Clashes" and "Stabs" often.
  • Each type of defense breaks will stun the enemy for different period of time, based on the difficulty of the technique. Sword stab and clashes being the longest, normal parry being the second, then dodge, and then blocking being the shortest.
Offensive - Swings
  • Swings are the most basic attack the player can perform, these are executed by swiping your finger along the screen where the enemy's standing. Similar to an enemy's attacks, there are four different directions to swings, left, right, up, and down.
  • It is generally recommended to ONLY use attacks when enemies are stunned and vulnerable to attacks. When attacking a standing enemy, they will always block it, and attacking an enemy in the middle of their attack will result in a scratch, which deals only 25% of the weapon damage.
Offensive - Breaks
  • As mentioned before, breaks will occur when performing defensive moves, when this happens, the enemy will be dazed or stunned, giving you the opportunity to use your swings to strike them.
  • There are different breaks, and these are essentially where all your offensive capabilities will shine from, since it is almost impossible to defeat an enemy without disabling them with defensive abilities.
  • The two special breaks, sword clashes and stabs stuns the enemy the longest, and is very much preferred to unleash ultra combos against the enemy. Sword clash happens when the parry is succeeded, but barely; this will trigger a scene where you and the enemy will clash weapons. To win a sword clash, you need to tap on the screen repeatedly, until the player character pushes the enemy off, thus stunning them for additional attacks. Stabs occur when a powerful attack from the enemy is deflected, resulting in them revealing their vulnerable area for a stab. Stabs are indicated by a pulsing circle hovering over the location that can be stabbed; perform a stab by pressing on the circle.
Offensive - Combo Strikes
  • Combo strikes are extremely powerful and are the strongest weapon attacks available in the game. Combos are performed by alternating swing directions on enemies that are disabled.
  • There are three types of combo strikes, and they are Huge Hit (3 hit), Mega Hit (4 hit), and Ultra Hit (5 hit). These combos scale in attack power the more hits they require, so it is recommended to perform these combo strikes as often as possible to defeat the enemies as fast as possible.
  • Huge Hits are performed by swinging three times in two opposite directions (ex. Left, Right, Left).
  • Mega Hits are performed by swinging four times in two directions, twice each side (ex, Left, Left, Right, Right)
  • Ultra Hits are performed by swinging in all four directions, plus one additional swing (ex, Left, Right, Up, Down, Left)
  • Different combos should be used on different breaks, as shorter breaks will result in the enemies recovering faster, cutting a combo short. Huge Hits should be used as often as possible, and save the longer combos for enemies which are disabled by Parry Break, stabs, and sword clashes.
Offensive & Defensive - Magic and Super Attack
  • On either side of the top of the screen, there are two icons, both of which are charge-skills that will aid you in battle. The left icon is the Super Attack, which is essentially a long break stun that you can use simply by tapping the icon, and it happens instantly. The right side icon is Magic, which changes depending on what ring the player is equipped with.
  • Once the magic icon is full and activated, players will need to follow the onscreen symbol directions to activate the spell. Different spells have different effects, and various enemies will also have weaknesses or resistances to these particular magic. The types of offensive magic are as follows:
  • Fire: Burns the enemy, may cause burning effect that damages over time.
  • Ice: Freezes the enemy, causes damage and may cause slow to the enemy.
  • Poison: Poisons the enemy over time.
  • Shock: Lightning strikes the enemy, shocking them and may damage over time.
  • Light: Beam of light strikes down on the enemy and causes damage.
  • Dark: Darkness damages the enemy.
  • Life Drain: Steals health from the enemy.
  • Defensive magic: There are two defensive magics; Shield and Heal. Shield recovers a certain amount of "hits" to your shield, depending on your magic stats and ring value. Heal regenerates an amount of health to the player, also depending on the magic and ring value currently equipped.
  • Super Attack is simply a huge attack that damages and stuns the enemy instantly after the icon is pressed. It is best to follow super attacks with Ultra combo hits for maximum damage.
  • Magic and Super Attacks are very powerful, they also "interrupt" the enemy in the middle of their attack, which is useful when enemies like the Godking are charging their special attacks. It is best to save these special abilities until absolutely required, because the charge time on them can be quite long.

Infinity Blade Campaign

Navigation
Navigating through the story mode is simple, as players only need to direct their character's direction in the game world. Almost every scene the player enters will be met with an enemy, they will block out treasures and paths until defeated. When encountering an enemy, a "!" icon can be found on the bottom right-hand side of the screen, which will give information on the enemy, such as their name, level, and weaknesses. Also, throughout the world, treasures are randomly scattered to be found. These treasures are usually hidden in awkward areas that require you to explore around the scene by dragging the screen to view the environment. Treasures include:
  • Health potions: which recover lost health outside of battle, only a max of 5 can be held.
  • Treasure chests: random items are stored inside these, varying from potions to gold to equipments.
  • Gold sacks: Bags of gold that players can use in the store.
Inventory and Store
  • Anytime outside of combat, you can pause the game and access the character screen with inventory and store. The character screen will have all the skill points currently allocated to your character, as well as points that are awaiting to be added. The 4 skill stats are Health, Attack, Shield, and Magic. Health increases the total health of the character, Attack adds on to the attack of the weapon equipped, Shield adds more shield value to the shield, and Magic powers up the spell power.
  • From the character screen, tap the inventory icon to access the character's inventory screen, where you can scroll through the current and available equipments. Here, you can also compare between the currently equipped gears and the available ones.
  • From the inventory or character screen, the store can be accessed. Here, the menu is almost identical to the inventory screen, except you can purchase the available equipments with gold acquired from battles and treasures. More gold can be purchased through the iTunes store via in-app purchase.
Enemies
  • Enemies in Infinity Blade come in three size and form. Their speed and attack power vary based on these sizes.
  • Normal-sized enemies are the same size as the player, these enemies are fast and usually hard to parry at higher levels. These enemies may attempt to use their shields to bash the player, which need to be blocked or dodged. The God-King is a normal-sized enemy.
  • Medium-sized enemies are bigger than the player, these enemies hit harder, but are also slower. Their special moves include shield charge and head charge, which are both easily avoidable with dodges. The Dark Knight, God King's right-hand man, is a medium-sized enemy.
  • Large-sized enemies are the biggest enemies in the game, often a few times bigger than the player. These enemies are often slower, but packs a punch, literally. When their hits connect, they can often take out large amount of hit-points from the player. Even the shield hits deplete faster as hits from these titans are blocked. Their special moves include a jumping ground stomp, and punches, both of which cannot be parried. The mechanical Iron Golems are an example of large-sized enemy.
  • Most enemies are similar, with the exception of the God-King. Depending on the level and bloodline, these enemies will attack and react faster than lower levels. Also these enemies will start to have resistances and elemental attacks, so plan ahead accordingly.
The God-King
  • The God-King is the final boss in Infinity Blade, the entire game is essentially focused on killing him. Players may require many, many tries to defeat him; don't fret if you don't manage to take him down the first couple of tries, as you will earn better equipment and get more experienced with the combat.
  • Even after the initial defeat, in the next bloodline, the God-King will climb in level even higher, so many more tries will be required to defeat him multiple times.
  • The key to winning against the God-King is to be extremely patient, and watch for patterns that he makes. Using every chance to deal as much damage as possible, the fight should turn in your favor if everything goes well.
  • Most of the God-King's normal attacks can be dodged, so watch carefully where he is swinging from and dodge accordingly. If it's too late to dodge, blocking with the shield is always better than taking a hit.
  • Learning how to parry against his attacks will be crucial to victory, as many of his hits are fast and hard-hitting, capable of eating through shields quickly, and at times dodging won't even be fast enough.
  • God-King will often 3 normal swings followed by 1 big swing, this is normal swing pattern. If the fourth big swing is dodged, parried, or blocked, it will often lead to a break. However, he often mixes this up with a 3 swing combo or a special combo, so it is important to watch him carefully for countering.
  • When the God-King is about to use a special attack, he will often move abnormally, such as stepping back, or swing his shield out; this is when you should be careful, because these special attacks could often be fatal. A well-timed parry can stop the combo midway, but it is generally very hard to time it within his sword flourish. Blocking with the shield will work with all his specials, but you will often leave with no more block points remaining.
  • As mentioned before, a well-timed magic cast or super attack can stop the God-King's attacks and combos, often leaving him open for combos. The two magic spells that are most beneficial to defeating him are the Shield and Heal spells. Higher level God-King are immune to most status and elemental damage, so defensive spells are the most useful. With enough magic skill points, casting a heal will often heal the player back to almost full health, and Shield will regain most of the points lost on the shield from blocking.
