Infineon Raceway is a motorsports racetrack in Sonoma, California. Each year, it hosts over 300 days of various types of racing activities, including series in NASCAR, NHRA Drag Racing, and Indy Racing League. Infineon is one of only two road courses on the NASCAR circuit.
The road course at Infineon offers 12 turns for drivers to negotiate. Built on what was once a 720-acre working dairy, it is now a 1,600-acre facility where NASCAR Sprint Cup Series holds the Toyota/Save Mart 350 each year, frequently on Father's Day weekend. Jeff Gordon, who spent the first part of his childhood in nearby Vallejo, has won five times at Infineon, the most of any driver.
Infineon Raceway History
Ground was broken on the raceway in August of 1968 and the surface of the course was completed three months later, enabling it to host the first race on December 1. The track closed for two years in May of 1970 due to financial losses and, over the next two decades, ownership of the track passed through several different hands.http://www.nascar.com/races/tracks/infineon/index.html
Through all the different ownership groups, however, racing continued, though much of it was non-spectator racing. IndyCar races, AMA Superbike events, and NHRA took turns hosting racing at the track, though no IndyCar races took place from 1970-2005. In 1989, NASCAR ran its inaugural race at Sonoma, with Ricky Rudd the winner.http://www.infineonraceway.com/raceway/about/history/
A four-year renovation project began in 2000, an the track was christened Infineon Raceway in 2002. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series winners since 2005 include Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, and Kyle Busch. Tony Stewart and Rusty Wallace are among the drivers who have won at Sonoma twice.http://www.infineonraceway.com/raceway/about/history/
