inFamous is a sandbox game in the style of Grand Theft Auto IV. Players assume the role of Cole, an ordinary person who develops extraordinary powers after a cataclysmic explosion and must choose to become a superhero, super villain or both. Cole's new abilities stem primarily from the manipulation of electricity. The game is set in Empire City and Cole initially sets out to discover the source of the huge explosion and how he survived the blast. Based on the choices he makes along the way, the city's inhabitants will react differently toward him.

There are more than 20 different stunts for players to learn and master in the game, and different trophies are rewarded for performing them. To complete the environmental kill stunt, players can use various items in the environment, like propane tanks, to defeat enemies.
