A common Ramadan tradition turned into disaster when Indonesian businessman, Haji Farouk, offering cash handouts to the poor turned into a stampede as spectators rushed forward to get their chance to grab some money on September 15, 2008. The stampede killed at least 21 people, most of which were trampled from the hundreds of others in the crowd or suffocated due to the crush of the stampede rush. Farouk has been charged with negligence for not providing authorities for information about his planned handout. He could serve five years in prison if convicted.
