Indira Gandhi was the first female Prime Minister of India. She was in office for three consecutive terms between 1966 to 1977 and for also won a fourth term which went from 1980 until she was assassinated in 1984. Indira grew up within the powerful political Nehru Dynasty and her father Jawaharlal Nehru was a pivotal figure in the Indian independence movement. In 1984 Gandhi was killed within her own palace, by her own Sikhs guards.
