Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, is another name for an upset stomach and is often accompanied by heartburn. It really isn't considered a disease but rather a collection of symptoms. Every one has an occasional upset stomach so it shouldn't be a health concern. However, if severe symptoms are present like vomiting or weight loss, indigestion may be a sign of a more serious condition. Mild indigestion can be controlled with and over-the-counter medications. See your doctor if the symptoms linger for more than a few weeks to be sure there are not underlying digestive problems involved.
Causes
Indigestion occurs after eating too fast, over eating, eating during stress, or eating fatty foods. Indigestion can also occur more often if you smoke, drink alcohol or don't get enough sleep. Indigestion can be common during pregnancy. Common symptoms are lack of appetite, burning in lower stomach, belching, gas, heartburn, nausea, and bloating. Any age or gender can suffer from indigestion.
