The National Football League's Indianapolis Colts play in the AFC South. They relocated from Baltimore in 1984; the franchise won one Super Bowl in Baltimore (Super Bowl V) and one in Indianapolis (Super Bowl XLI). The Baltimore Colts also won two pre-Super Bowl NFL championships.http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nfl/balticolts/baltcolts.html
The Colts roots can be traced back to the Dallas Texans who were one of the founding member teams of the NFL. In 1953, the team became the Baltimore Colts and began playing in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. The Colts were the first NFL team to have cheerleaders and was one of the NFL's first early successful franchises winning NFL championships in 1958,1959, and 1968. The 1958 NFL Championship game is considered by many is the greatest NFL game of all time.
The Colts also have their place in NFL history as the first NFL team ever to lose to an AFL team in a Super Bowl. The 1969 Super Bowl featured the Colts versus the up start New York Jets of the AFL and their star quarterback Joe Namath. Namath predicted a Jets victory over the Colts which they delivered. The victory also sealed a merger between the NFL and the AFL.
The club continued to have success in the 1970's, but started to struggle in the 1980's and by then, there was talk of the Colts wanting to leave their beloved Baltimore. The Iray's wanted the city of Baltimore to build them a new stadium or at least make repairs to Memorial Stadium, but the city did not want to put that kind of investment in the team.
When the franchise suddenly moved from Baltimore to Indianapolis in 1984, the Colts were far removed from the halcyon days of Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas and the squad only managed 12 wins over their first three seasons in Indiana. It was a heartbreaking moment for the city when the team left.
Owner Jim Irsay took over ownership of the club in 1998 after his father's passing, and talented Tennessee QB Peyton Manning was their top pick of that year's draft. Fortunes began to improve steadily, and in 2007 the Colts beat the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI.
