Indiana Primary Results 2008

  • After long delays due to a slow count in Lake County, Hillary Clinton was declared the winner in the 2008 Indiana Primary.

Several hours after polls closed, CBS projected that Clinton would be victorious in Indiana. However, other TV networks were more cautious, refusing to make projection about the outcome until more of the vote was in.

Votes cast in Lake County, which borders Obama's home state of Illinois, had not been tallied by 1 am ET. Lake County's mayor, Rudy Clay, said the delay was due to the need to count absentee ballots.

The Indiana primary is among the last to be held, and is seen as particularly important, given the extended primary fight between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

  • Delegates Up for Grabs

85 Democratic delegates are at stake in the Indiana primary, and 57 Republican delegates are up for grabs. Because it falls so late in the primary lineup, Indiana's contest has traditionally not been make-or-break for candidates. Because the race is so tight between Clinton and Obama, the primary has become particularly important for both Democratic candidates.

After Indiana and North Carolina, only six Democratic contests will remain: West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Montana and South Dakota.

  • Recent Polls

Results of a poll of Indiana Democrats released on April 3, 2008, showed Clinton (49%) leading slightly over Obama (46%). The most important issue to voters in deciding their choice for nominee was the economy/job creation (39%).
