In Treatment Reviews

    • "It's an unfortunate opening clunker, because the first show has to set in motion the series' intricate web of emotional dominoes, and once you dip into the other episodes - especially the unpredictably nurturing, taut and combative end-of-the-week sessions with Byrne and Wiest, in which the physicians sometimes find it hard to heed the heal-thyself admonishment - the series starts to take its prickly, tantalizing shape."
    • "Ultimately, though, the stagy feeling of the individual components -- each essentially two-character pieces that self-consciously exhibit a writer's touch -- strain the show's credibility and tend to cause one's attention to lag. In short, HBO gets more credit for laying down the bet on "In Treatment" than what it pays off."
    • "As a concept, In Treatment is intriguing. The story never leaves the four walls of the session, so it's far more than the psychological seasoning that Dr. Melfi provided Tony on "The Sopranos" and much more claustrophobic than "Tell Me You Love Me," where the couples had to leave the office to go have explicit, though boring, sex."
    • "It's a unique and ambitious idea, but I think I need to go into therapy just trying to understand why HBO feels that now is the right time to air this potentially doomed show."
    • "So rife with projection and transference and counter-transference, so steeped in the pain of both denial and self-awareness, so unabashedly unconventional, proves that HBO is still trying to break new ground."
    • "It all makes for lots of great soapy intrigue, and Byrne makes you believe he can solve everyone's problems. Except his own."
    • "An innovative and powerful nightly serial that compellingly confirms the long-held belief that those most in need of psychotherapy are psychotherapists."
    • "A good portion of "In Treatment" is fascinating, but by no means is it a fun ride."
    • "In terms of format, "In Treatment" is certainly daring. But in this case different isn't necessarily better."
